Location & Surroundings
Situated in Tuscola, TX, the park is nestled among thick groves of native pecan, elm, and oak trees along the banks of Elm Creek. The surrounding terrain provides a scenic backdrop of low-lying hills, offering a more diverse landscape than the flat prairies typically associated with the region. It serves as a peaceful sanctuary just a short drive south of the city of Abilene, providing a secluded natural environment while remaining close to modern conveniences.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, featuring campsites with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical hookups along with water and sewer connections in many loops. One of the crown jewels of the property is the historic swimming pool, a CCC-built masterpiece that remains a popular spot for cooling off during the Texas summer. Visitors also have access to a trailer dump station, clean restrooms with showers, and numerous shaded picnic areas designed for large groups or solo travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of multi-use trails or visit nearby Lake Abilene for fishing and non-motorized boating. History lovers should not miss the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, which offers a glimpse into frontier life just minutes away from the park gates. Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for families and nature lovers who enjoy a traditional state park atmosphere. Because of the ample shade and historic stone structures, it appeals to those who prefer a rustic, scenic environment over a modern commercial lot. It is a perfect choice for RVers looking for a quiet home base while exploring the rich cultural heritage and natural landscapes of the Texas Big Country.

Helpful staff, beautiful Fall leaves, good hiking trails, campsites on my loop (site 77) were well-spaced & not cramped - most with tree-surround. Metal firepits with a half grate. Mine was a tent site, & I have a 10x10 to share with a claustro dog. There was a gravel/paved pad for the tent, or two spots in the grass were large enough, which is what I chose. Bathrooms on my loop were in good order & had a shower.

Beautiful park. Super friendly and helpful park staff at head quarters. Seen deer, little baby hogs running across the road, armadillos, bunch of little Jack rabbits, owls hooting at night. The Stars are super bright at night at this park. The only downside, which is actually kind of a plus depending on how you look at it, is that the phone service is spotty. Although you can connect to guest wifi by the front head quarters if you really need to get connection and it works just fine.

We enjoyed this park because it is quiet, peaceful and low-key. Abilene State Park is wonderful for senior citizens and families with young children. The hiking trails are easy. The lake is bone dry. We saw wild turkeys, deer, squirrels, dove & a armadillo.

I was pleasantly surprised by this park. The campsites were very well kept and well shaded. This was the only SP I’ve been to that had a red light outside the bathroom, so there wasn’t a million bugs. Bathrooms were clean with nice showers, no AC but had a huge fan that kept air moving. There were a lot of nice trails for hiking, but the lake was super low. The town of Buffalo Gap is super cute and the cafe was awesome.

Beautiful Texas State Park. I went in May, and weather was great. This park has a decent length trail, with side trails you can take, if you want to make it longer. Really enjoyed the red soil. It was a nice change from DFW's landscape. The wildflowers also out really added to the scene. I didn't come across a lot of people either, so it was nice to have some solitude.
