Ackley Lake

Overview

Ackley Lake State Park offers a quiet, unpretentious retreat in the heart of Montana's Judith Basin. This 160-acre reservoir is known for its clear waters and panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this state park provides a rustic camping experience where the primary focus is on the natural landscape and the tranquility of the water. It is a preferred destination for travelers seeking a slower pace and a connection to the Big Sky Country’s outdoor heritage.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles from the small town of Hobson, MT, the park sits at an elevation of over 4,300 feet. The geography is characterized by rolling plains that meet the dramatic silhouettes of the Little Belt and Snowy Mountains. This high-prairie setting provides wide-open vistas and incredible opportunities for stargazing at night. The surrounding Judith Basin is steeped in agricultural history, offering a peaceful rural backdrop that feels miles away from modern distractions.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 23 campsites designed for those who enjoy boondocking or dry camping, as there are no electrical or water hookups available. RVers should come prepared with full tanks, though essential services are maintained on-site:

  • Vault toilets and a hand-pump for potable water.
  • A concrete boat launch for easy lake access.
  • Dedicated picnic tables and fire rings at each site.

Most sites offer a level surface and easy access to the shoreline, making it convenient to launch a kayak or cast a line right from your camp.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the main draw here, with rainbow trout fishing being a highlight for many visitors. The lake is also popular for swimming, windsurfing, and paddleboarding during the summer months. Beyond the park, travelers can explore the Lewis and Clark National Forest for hiking and wildlife viewing. The nearby town of Hobson offers a glimpse into local Montana life, while the Charlie Russell Country region provides artistic and historical context for the famous Western painter.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery and solitude over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for anglers, photographers, and families who enjoy simple outdoor activities like campfire cooking and lakeside play. If you are looking for a quiet stopover or a peaceful basecamp to explore central Montana’s rugged beauty, Ackley Lake provides a serene environment far removed from the noise of the interstate.

From the photos I saw online with mountains, this lake was not what I was expecting. Those mountainous photos are incorrect. Has several camp sites, one boat launch (there may be another I just didn't go down that far), 2 or 3 outhouses. The day I went was towards the end of summer so the lake was low, grass dry and brown, and super chilly. Otherwise it seemed to be a decent place to fish as observed by the retirees out on boats and along the shore fishing. The picture I am including shows how high the water can be. Also there is tons of seaweed, but most lakes have that.

No chance of fishing in this lake! 10 boats and 3 jet skis. I’ve used a lot of pit toilets, but this one gives a whole new meaning of disgusting. Camp spots are exposed.

Clean comfortable camp. Great if you have a water craft. Toilets. No water. No elec. I was there through July 4. Not much in the way of bugs. Swimming for the children. Quiet at night.
