Overview
Forked Lake State Campground offers a quintessential wilderness experience within the heart of the Adirondack Park. Located near the town of Long Lake, New York, this destination is celebrated for its primitive camping atmosphere and pristine natural beauty. Unlike modern resorts, the park emphasizes a deep connection with the outdoors, providing a quiet retreat for those looking to escape the bustle of daily life. The shoreline is rugged and scenic, characterized by dense hemlock forests and the clear, calm waters of Forked Lake.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Hamilton County, the park sits on the eastern shore of a long, narrow lake that provides a gateway to the Whitney Wilderness Area. The surrounding landscape is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve, offering miles of untouched woods and diverse wildlife sightings. The terrain is rocky and forested, typical of the central Adirondack region. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a secluded environment where the sounds of loons and the rustle of leaves replace the hum of traffic, creating a genuine North Country sanctuary.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive facility, the park focuses on basic necessities rather than luxury comforts. It features a limited number of drive-in sites suitable for smaller RVs and camper vans, though it is important to note there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Visitors have access to the following features:
- Vault toilets and hand pumps for water
- Individual picnic tables and fire rings
- A dedicated boat launch for motorized and non-motorized craft
- On-site canoe and kayak rentals for lake exploration
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with world-class opportunities for paddling and fishing for brook trout and smallmouth bass. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the charming village of Long Lake or visit the Adirondack Experience museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Hiking enthusiasts often head to nearby Buttermilk Falls or the various trailheads leading into the High Peaks region. The area serves as a central hub for nature photography, birdwatching, and exploring the rich cultural history of the New York wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who prefer dry camping or "boondocking" in a rugged, natural setting. It is best suited for those with smaller rigs, camper vans, or truck campers who value solitude and scenic views over modern amenities like Wi-Fi or laundry. If your goal is to disconnect from technology and spend your days on the water or sitting by a campfire deep in the woods, Forked Lake provides an authentic experience for travelers who appreciate the path less traveled.

It was one of the best campgrounds that I experienced in the U.S. , we reserved the camp site in the island and also we rent a boat to reach to our campsite so we could have the boat for the whole day and we went to the lake for boating at the middle of the night and looking at the sky and the stars was amazing. There are the toilet cabins for each campsite.

Amazing site! Tons of spots along the various shores with a mossy woodland hike between each

I have been coming here since I was in diapers. One of the best places to camp, canoe, swim, fish and relax. Starting going here with my parents and brothers, in my teens and 20’s I took my best friends, now I get to take my husband. This lake is gorgeous, peaceful and the rangers over the many decades have been the best in the nation (in my humble option). I hope to come here for the rest of my life.

Idyllic. Canoe in to get off the beaten path. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful in making sure we had a place to stay for the night, especially Ethan. Each site on the water is equipped with a place to beach or dock a boat, an outhouse, and a bear locker for food/trash. Hope to be back here soon.

We stayed at site 46 and it was awesome! Beautiful moonrises, great sunrises, all tucked in a cozy little private cove! Pit toilets, bear boxes, picnic table and metal fire pit at our site and every other site, I’d assume. We’ll be back next year!
