Adirondack/Lake Harris

Overview

Adirondack/Lake Harris Campground offers a quintessential wilderness experience within the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. Managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation, this facility provides a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. Situated on the north shore of Lake Harris, the campground serves as a primary gateway to the vast High Peaks region, offering campers a blend of rustic charm and incredible scenic beauty.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the scenic town of Newcomb, New York, the park is positioned along the northern shore of a stunning 275-acre body of water. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the High Peaks Wilderness, providing a dramatic backdrop of towering mountain ranges and dense hardwood forests. Because of its central location, visitors can easily access the Upper Hudson River, which flows through this area, offering a rare look at the river's wild and undeveloped beginnings.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park focuses on a primitive experience, it provides essential comforts for visiting RV travelers. The sites are notably large and private, though they generally lack water or electric hookups. On-site facilities include a modern bathhouse with hot showers, a recycling center, and a convenient dump station for RVers. Water enthusiasts will appreciate the boat launch and the availability of canoe and kayak rentals, making it easy to explore the connected waterways directly from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away in the Newcomb area. Just a short trip from the campground is the Adirondack Interpretive Center, where miles of well-marked trails offer insights into local ecology and wildlife. History buffs should visit Great Camp Santanoni, a historic architectural treasure accessible via a scenic walk, bike ride, or horse-drawn wagon. For those looking for vertical challenges, nearby trailheads lead to the most famous summits in the Adirondacks, including Mount Marcy and Algonquin Peak.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes natural surroundings over resort-style luxuries. It is a haven for paddlers, anglers, and hikers who want a quiet basecamp for deep outdoor exploration. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of loons and waking up to misty lake views, Lake Harris is the perfect fit. It is best suited for those who appreciate off-grid camping and a genuine connection with the Adirondack wilderness.

First time staying in a NY state park campground. Very well maintained all around and a beautiful setting. Close to a lot of beautiful hikes. Would definitely come back again.

We had a great time camping at this campground ( except for the biting flies) . The restrooms were well maintained and the lake itself was gorgeous. We were in Newcomb ,New York for the Teddy Roosevelt Days festivities. Love the Adirondacks 💗

I was there once a long time ago. It was a State Park, and Campground then. A beautiful place indeed. Rest rooms were okay, plenty of potable water. Fire pits were handy as were picnic tables at each campsites. The picnic area near the beach is an amazing place for stargazing. One moonless night there I saw trees throwing shadows by the light of the Milky Way.
