Adirondack/Lewey Lake

Overview

Lewey Lake Campground offers a quintessential Adirondack experience for those seeking a deep connection with nature. Managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, this facility provides a rustic wilderness setting that feels worlds away from the hustle of modern life. Spread across the shoreline of Lewey Lake and the Miami River, the park is designed for visitors who appreciate quiet evenings and star-filled skies. While the park accommodates both tents and RVs, it maintains a primitive character that honors the surrounding forest preserve.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Sabael, NY, near the town of Indian Lake, the campground is nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The terrain is characterized by dense hardwoods and scenic water views, as the park sits at the junction of Lewey Lake and the Miami River. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by thousands of acres of protected forest, providing a sense of seclusion and privacy. The landscape is dominated by the looming presence of Snowy Mountain, which provides a dramatic backdrop for the eastern shore of the lake.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state-run facility, Lewey Lake focuses on essential amenities rather than luxury resort features. The park provides on-site dump stations and communal water spigots for RV users, though it is important to note there are no individual water, sewer, or electric hookups. Facilities include restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, which are centrally located for convenience. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. For those looking to explore the water, the park offers a boat launch and convenient canoe and kayak rentals.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors in this region. Hikers can tackle the Snowy Mountain Trail, which offers a challenging climb and a fire tower with panoramic views of the central Adirondacks. Fishing enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to catch northern pike, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch in the lake’s clear waters. Paddling through the Miami River is another popular activity, providing a peaceful way to observe local wildlife like loons and occasionally moose. The nearby town of Indian Lake offers small-town charm and essential supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lewey Lake is an ideal choice for off-grid RVers and boondockers who enjoy a minimalist lifestyle. It is best suited for those with smaller to mid-sized rigs who are comfortable without hookups and prefer a quiet, wooded atmosphere over a commercial resort vibe. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like hiking, swimming, and evening campfires will find this park perfectly aligns with their travel style. If you seek a serene environment where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of traffic, this Sabael destination is for you.

Many good campsites in the woods. Many good campsites on the lake and on a Brook. What is most noteworthy is the staff and especially the supervisor Don! Our battery went dead on our camper. He allowed us to borrow his battery until we could get a new one. He was also especially helpful when I needed open space for our starlink,! so I could work. He allowed us to use the electric at the main campground and supplied us with a long extension cord, so I could work. thanks again Don you were the best. The bathroom and showers are especially clean and supplied well. The beach and view is beautiful. There are canoe and kayaks to rent to enjoy the lake. Looking forward to going back next year .

It's a very nice place and there are some real beautiful sites to see, however there are some small things that could be improved. Overall it's a good place to spend some time.

Very clean and quiet, hot showers, ice and firewood on site. The only change I would make is lower the cost of firewood.

I almost got eaten by a black bear here. Still came back to visit any time relatives and friends were staying, but that was the last time I ever stayed overnight in a tent ngl. Great place, great trails, nothing negative about it. I'd recommend a campter/rv though... Tents feel like a 'bear burrito' even though they tend to be more docile than hostile, when one tries to get into your tent, it feels hostile. It's still a story I tell with a laugh. I live in the woods now because of staying at places like this. Nothing beats waking up to birds singing.
