Adirondack/Meacham Lake
Overview
Meacham Lake Campground offers a quintessential Adirondack experience in the northern reaches of New York. This state-run facility is nestled on the shores of a stunning 1,200-acre lake, providing a serene environment for travelers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style amenities. The campground serves as a gateway to the vast wilderness of the North Country, where the scent of pine and the calls of loons define the atmosphere of every stay.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the quiet town of Duane, the park is enveloped by the Debar Mountain Wild Forest. This location feels pleasantly remote, yet it is easily reached via State Route 30. The surrounding landscape consists of dense hardwood forests and rolling hills, with Meacham Lake serving as the central focal point. Its position in the northern Adirondack Park makes it a quieter alternative to the more crowded southern lake regions.
Amenities & Park Features
As a DEC facility, the park focuses on preserving the wilderness experience. While there are no utility hookups, the park provides essential comforts for a comfortable stay. Key features include:
- A large sandy beach with a designated swimming area and a nearby playground.
- A concrete boat launch suitable for both motorized and non-motorized vessels.
- Vital facilities including hot showers, flush toilets, and a trailer dump station.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts often prioritize the hike up Debar Mountain, which offers rewarding views of the surrounding lake country. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake being well-known for northern pike and yellow perch. For those interested in local ecology, the Paul Smith's College VIC is a short drive south, offering interpretive trails. Paddling the quiet waters of Clear Pond nearby provides another peaceful way to explore the local ecosystem.

This is a very nice, rustic campground, especially if you can get a lakefront site. We decided to camp here as a final outing of the season somewhat last minute, so no lake views for us. Our site was large with a good buffer between neighbors. Plenty of room to back in and maneuver our small (18') RV. There are NO HOOKUPS at any of the sites, so you'll want to be pretty self contained. Due to the lack of hookups, there were some campers running generators, but I didn't find it too intrusive. There are also plenty of trees (you're in the forest, after all), so anyone relying on solar panels or Starlink will need to be extra choosey about their site. Bathrooms are dotted throughout the campground, but these are not heated and made for some chilly October morning potty trips! Also, if you have an issue with spiders don't bother with the bathrooms. Along similar lines, the showers are not in with the bathrooms. Instead, there are designated shower facilities (also not heated) with non-adjustable, push-button showers. At least the water was warm. I'm not sure if this is strictly allowed, but we scoped out the sites in person after the park closed the previous fall. This gave us the chance to see what locations would work best for our rig. I would recommend this, as the website (Reserve America) doesn't always make it clear. Not all sites are appropriate for all rigs. This is NOT a cookie cutter KOA! All said and done, I would recommend Meacham Lake Campground, as long as you know what you are getting into. Facilities are old, but we'll maintained, and the surroundings are spectacular.

The campsite was really beautiful. I enjoyed that each site has a fire pit and picnic table nearby. My group very comfortably fit 2 cars and 6 people in 4 tents on the group site. The bathrooms and showers were convenient. There was also a convenient truck that came by between 5 and 6 pm each day to sell firewood, snacks, and some other basics.

This place has been basically a family ritual since the early 2000s, and there’s no other camping experience as good as here! The staff are always really friendly and helpful, and the sites are always spotless. The bathrooms are the cleanest i’ve seen for a campground, and the lake and hiking are great and even walkable straight from your campsite! It really is a special place, and has kept us coming back for over 15 years. And better yet, there is a couple who always come through with their ice cream truck, and they keep other commodities too like things from ice, all the way to tiki torches and yard games, and none of it is over priced either! They are spectacular people, and staying here let’s us support their business too, so it’s a win-win!

Huge beach, stage with seating, playground, hiking, biking, boat launch, nice sites, beach sites, day use, barbeque with tables, expansive lawns. Nice place in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.
