Alamo Lake

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Alamo Lake State Park is a premier destination for those seeking a tranquil escape into the Arizona desert. Far removed from the bustle of city life, this park offers a pristine environment centered around a large reservoir. Visitors can expect a rugged, natural landscape that highlights the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. It is an ideal spot for travelers who enjoy dark night skies and a peaceful, quiet atmosphere perfect for unwinding under the stars.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the remote desert near Wenden, AZ, the park is accessed via paved roads that wind through scenic, high-desert terrain. The surroundings are characterized by rolling hills, wildflowers during the spring season, and the expansive blue waters of the lake. Because it is located in a secluded desert location, travelers should plan to stock up on supplies in larger towns before heading out, as the area offers a truly immersive wilderness experience.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides well-maintained facilities designed to accommodate both tents and RVs. Many sites offer electric and water hookups, making it comfortable for longer stays. Guests can take advantage of clean restrooms, hot showers, and a visitor center that provides information on local wildlife. The park is also known for its on-site boat ramp, which provides easy access to the water for recreational activities, while several ramadas provide essential shade from the desert sun.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of Alamo Lake is its world-class fishing, particularly for largemouth bass and tilapia. Beyond the water, birdwatching is a popular pastime, as the lake attracts a variety of waterfowl and desert species. Hiking enthusiasts will find several trails that offer panoramic desert views and opportunities to spot bighorn sheep or burros. The remote nature of the park also makes it a top-tier location for stargazing and astrophotography due to the minimal light pollution.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, and those looking to disconnect from technology. If you enjoy boating, fishing, and hiking in a serene desert environment, you will find this location hard to beat. It is particularly well-adapted for self-contained RVers who appreciate nature-focused travel over resort-style amenities. If you prefer quiet mornings and active days spent exploring rugged landscapes, this Arizona gem will likely become a favorite stop on your itinerary.

Went to the lake for some fishing and stayed in the tent camping area. This was my first time to the lake. I get there go to the ranger station for a camp pass. Wanted to see what was available before checking out the sites. I then asked what site would you recommend that has a canopy for some shade. He sends me to a site that has no canopy. Not even a spot for a tent and hes the one training the new girl, i grab a different site pay my dues and so the next day he drives up to my camp gets out and asked where my tag is I said "It doesn’t fit in my mirror, the paper ripped." He said "ok well do you have the tag?" I said "somewhere". He said "you need to have it displayed" with attitude. I showed him my receipt and said "dude I just saw you yesterday evening relax, I paid for the 3 nights go check your little computer instead of harassing me" I haven't stayed at a camp ground in almost a decade. I disperse camp and this is exaclty why. Even when you pay you'll get bothered, on a daily basis. They'll drive right up to your camp, park walk up to your camp, disturb you just to see if your tag is displayed. They know whos staying at that site without displaying a tag. It just makes it easier for them. The only info I didnt give them was my social security #. They know exactly whos staying there. So if you're used to camping in peace and quiet, don't camp at the state park. East of the state park is disperse camping. And you can camp right on the water. Free with way more campsite options and space. Don't do what I did. I learned what not to do. So next time I'll stay east and not be bothered. Crazy what people pay money for.

Love the campground location and large clean sites. Love the burros. Not crazy about the New Years shotgun and firecracker noise freaking out the dog for two days full days.

Great place, but you must come prepare!, views are not the best, but it's a place away from the masses that's a plus, in my opinion.

This secret gem was awesome. Beautiful scenery, walking trails, lookout points, slot canyon to visit, fishing, etc. We stayed in Lot C. Very quiet, hookups if needed, clean public bathroom and showers near by. Friendly neighbors from other areas. We'll definitely be back!

We've been camping at Alamo Lake for my husband's birthday for the past few years and love it. I am not a huge fan of desert camping but this is a great winter camping spot with a beautiful lake that is great for kayaking and fishing.
