Alcova Lake/Fremont Canyon Campground

Overview

The Alcova Lake and Fremont Canyon Campground area offers a distinct high-desert escape centered around the clear waters of the Alcova Reservoir. Managed by Natrona County, these sites provide a mix of developed and primitive camping options. The landscape is defined by its striking contrast between turquoise water and the rugged, sun-drenched terrain of central Wyoming. It is a premier destination for those looking to combine waterfront recreation with the solitude of the western wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 30 miles southwest of Casper, Wyoming, the park sits at an elevation of 5,300 feet. The most dramatic feature is Fremont Canyon, where steep granite walls rise hundreds of feet above the North Platte River. The surrounding area is characterized by stunning red rock formations and vast sagebrush plains. Travelers will find the environment both harsh and beautiful, offering wide-open skies and direct access to the Alcova Dam and the reservoir's shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

While the camping experience varies by specific site, the park offers several loops with electric hookups and potable water access for RVers. Many sites feature concrete pads, fire rings, and sturdy picnic tables designed to withstand the Wyoming wind. Key features of the area include:

  • Multiple accessible boat ramps and docks for easy water access.
  • Modern vault toilets and seasonal dump stations for convenience.
  • Designated areas for shoreline camping and canyon views.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor adventure is the primary draw here, with world-class fly fishing on the nearby Miracle Mile stretch of the North Platte River. Fremont Canyon is a magnet for rock climbers and kayakers who want to explore the deep, narrow gorge. History buffs can take a short drive to Independence Rock State Historic Site, a landmark once carved by pioneers on the Oregon Trail. The reservoir itself is perfect for paddleboarding, jet skiing, and exploring hidden coves.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active RV travelers who prioritize proximity to water and rugged landscapes over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for boaters and anglers who want a basecamp right on the shoreline. Families who enjoy unstructured outdoor play and explorers looking for a quiet, scenic stopover in the heart of Wyoming will find the atmosphere here rewarding. It appeals most to those who appreciate a true sense of place and natural beauty.

I wanted to love this spot and when I got there The descent into the campground was a steep loose gravel path and if you slid you would have slid into a campsite. I saw big RVs in there and I don't know how they did it. But I was n't bending a tailpipe to get in. I ended up going up the road to the beach camping that said reservation only but there was a ton of spots available. I liked it so much. I stayed 2 days longer than I planned.
