Alfred A. Loeb
Overview
Nestled along the banks of the scenic Chetco River, Alfred A. Loeb State Park offers a serene escape into Oregon’s coastal wilderness. Known for its ancient groves of rare Oregon Myrtlewood trees, the park provides a lush, shaded environment that feels worlds away from the hustle of highway travel. It is a quintessential Pacific Northwest destination where the forest meets the water, offering a peaceful atmosphere for those looking to reconnect with nature while enjoying reliable facilities.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated approximately ten miles inland from Brookings, providing a unique microclimate that is often warmer and sunnier than the immediate coastline. Surrounded by the Siskiyou National Forest, the park serves as a gateway to the Chetco River, which is famous for its remarkably clear, turquoise waters. The towering trees and the gentle sound of the flowing river create a secluded sanctuary that showcases the diverse and rugged landscape of Southern Oregon.
Amenities & Park Features
For RV travelers, the park features well-maintained sites equipped with electrical and water hookups. While there are no sewer hookups at the individual sites, the campground includes modern restrooms and hot showers, ensuring a comfortable stay despite the rustic setting. Most sites are paved and level, nestled beneath a canopy of evergreens and hardwoods, offering a degree of privacy and a genuine woodland experience that is increasingly rare in coastal parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Redwood Nature Trail, located just across the river, which features some of the northernmost coastal redwoods in existence. The Chetco River is a focal point for seasonal salmon and steelhead fishing, as well as swimming and kayaking during the summer months. A short drive back toward the coast leads to the dramatic cliffs and hidden beaches of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for RVers who prefer quiet, nature-centric camping over the high-energy amenities of a luxury resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking to play in the river and hikers eager to walk among ancient giants. Because of its lush scenery and tranquil vibe, it also appeals strongly to photographers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a slower pace of travel away from the more crowded coastal highway stops.

The campsites are well maintained. Within walking distance to the river. The hiking/walking trial is a very beautiful trail with views of the river. Strollers would probably work up to the first walking bridge. After that it narrows and has steep drops. I don't recommend for small children.

Gorgeous surrounding area with clean, more private feeling tent sites. Check in/out was a breeze. Felt very safe and comfortable throughout our stay and will be returning as soon as possible. Internet/service is a little spotty, as the campsite is in the sticks. River was warm, calm, and fairly shallow.

Amazing views!! The drive there, alone, was breathtaking. The showers are the best part after a really long hike. There is water there! There is power here. You can apparently get spaces up to 2 weeks. After that, you have to wait 3 days to camp there again. They are dog friendly, too! The toilets DO get backed up, so DON'T flush extra things in there. For the sake of everyone else 🙄 there are firepits and picnic tables with plenty of room for your dog or kids. It's quiet, and everyone is friendly and keeps to themselves. I absolutely loved it here. Especially because it's next to the river and close to the botanical garden.

Fantastic camp spot for smaller rvs. I am in love with it & will definitely be back for more. My husband & I hiked along the Chetco, walked through the redwoods & enjoyed the scenic beaches. So quiet, especially on week days.

Perfection. Quiet campground, I swear everyone was asleep by 9pm. 😆 Chetco river is beautiful, shallow and WARM! Great for swimming or kayaking around a bit.The restrooms are as clean I've seen at campgrounds with flushable toilets. Showers are clean and water temp was fine. Not cold. Firewood is sold by camp host. Kid friendly and dogs are welcome. At night the only sounds I could hear was a hoot owl. We will make this our annual trip. Trails along the river lead to the Redwood trail. You won't be disappointed. Just a short drive to the coast and Samuel H Boardman state scenic corridor. Close enough to Hike to Secret beach and kayaking back at camp.
