Allegheny/Hearts Content Recreation Area
Overview
Hearts Content Recreation Area offers a rare opportunity to camp alongside a National Scenic Area in the Allegheny National Forest. Known for its grove of old-growth timber, the campground provides a serene, primitive experience for those looking to disconnect. It is one of the few places in Pennsylvania where visitors can walk among 300-year-old white pines and hemlocks, creating a profound sense of history and natural beauty within the forest canopy.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 15 miles south of Warren, PA, the park is nestled deep within the Allegheny National Forest. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling hills and dense woodlands. The highlight of the location is the adjacent Hearts Content National Scenic Area, a 20-acre remnant of the original forest that once covered the region. This secluded spot offers a cool, shaded environment even during the height of summer.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest service site, the campground focuses on a back-to-basics experience. There are no utility hookups available, making it ideal for self-contained RVs or those who enjoy dry camping. The park features several campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Facilities include vault toilets and hand-pumped well water. While the sites are relatively level, the winding access roads are best suited for smaller trailers and modest-sized motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore starting with the Hearts Content Interpretive Trail, which loops through the ancient forest. For more ambitious hikers, the Tanbark Trail connects the area to the North Country National Scenic Trail. A short drive north leads to the Allegheny Reservoir, offering boating and fishing opportunities. Additionally, the historic town of Warren provides local dining and supplies for travelers venturing out from their forest retreat.

It is an excellent choice for travelers with small campers or van lifers who do not require modern amenities like electricity or sewer connections. Beautiful old growth forest. Easy walking trail for all ages. No hills or climbing. There is a bathroom available but it's primitive, no electricity or running water.

The area is known for the virgin trees that survived the logging era. 300 year old tall straight beautiful trees tower above you in a mature forest. The heart's content trail has the best examples.

There’s a nice pavilion here and there are walking trails there’s no bathrooms or no overlook. Parking is kinda scarce. And some of the paths are very bumpy you could definitely roll an ankle if you’re not careful.

Beautiful location to do a quick hike. There is a lot to see in all directions and you can get a good feel for what this greater area must have looked like a couple hundred years ago. There are downed trees all over, but the paths are all clear and easily identifiable. There are plenty of lower branches and overhang, so you might get face full of web or hanging caterpillar, but it's not too bad. The early morning hike was nice since there was no one else out and the sounds of the forest were very present.
