Allegheny/Twin Lakes Recreation Area
Overview
Located within the lush expanses of the Allegheny National Forest, the Allegheny/Twin Lakes Recreation Area offers a nostalgic and quiet camping experience. This historic site, largely developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, centers around two scenic impoundments known for their clear water and peaceful atmosphere. It provides a serene woodland retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature. The park is characterized by its towering hardwoods and the gentle rhythm of forest life, making it a staple for traditional outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true escape.
Location & Surroundings
The recreation area is situated just south of Kane, PA, nestled deep within the Allegheny Plateau. The surroundings are defined by a dense canopy of black cherry, birch, and maple trees, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from modern civilization. Despite its forest location, the park is accessible via well-maintained forest roads. The landscape features rolling hills and small streams that feed into the Twin Lakes, providing a picturesque backdrop for every campsite in the loop and creating a cool, shaded environment even in summer.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, the amenities focus on the natural environment rather than modern luxury resorts. The park provides several essential features for a comfortable stay:
- A designated swimming beach with a sandy area for families.
- A historic bathhouse equipped with flush toilets and showers.
- An accessible fishing pier on the lower lake for anglers.
- Spacious campsites featuring fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables.
While the sites are primitive and do not offer electric or water hookups, these facilities ensure that your basic needs are met while you enjoy the wilderness. The focus here is on traditional camping values and the preservation of the forest's natural beauty.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the famous Kinzua Sky Walk, located a short drive away, offering breathtaking views of the Kinzua Valley from a repurposed viaduct. For hikers, the Twin Lakes Trail connects directly to the North Country National Scenic Trail, providing miles of trekking opportunities through rugged Pennsylvania terrain. The nearby town of Kane offers charming local distilleries, wineries, and artisan shops, perfect for a day trip when you want to explore the local culture and regional flavors of the plateau.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking and dry camping over high-end resort amenities. If your travel style involves a digital detox and falling asleep to the sounds of nature rather than city noise, you will find this park perfect. It is exceptionally well-suited for families and trout anglers who appreciate a quiet, slow-paced environment where the primary focus is exploring the great outdoors. It is a must-visit for those who enjoy the simplicity and heritage of national forest camping.

I cannot say enough things about this amazing place. This is a real retreat. No cell service except for two tiny spots, a natural water spring with the best tasting and coldest water you will ever find, and an amazing staff make this a true gem in the Forrest.

Great campsite for overnight camping, picnic lunch, or fishing! Beautiful walking trail the whole way around the lake with a bridge over the spillway! The Friends of Twin Lakes are really going above and beyond to make Twin Lakes great again!
