Allison Point

Overview

Allison Point is a distinctive waterfront destination managed by the City of Valdez, offering an authentic Alaskan experience for those who prioritize location over luxury. Unlike traditional inland campgrounds, this site consists of a long stretch of paved sites positioned directly along the shoreline of Port Valdez. It is widely recognized as one of the most popular shore-fishing locations in the state, drawing visitors who want to step out of their RV and immediately cast a line into the salt water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at the end of Dayville Road, the park is framed by the dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains. The environment is a unique blend of industrial and natural beauty, located near the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and adjacent to the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery. This specific location creates a high-energy atmosphere where the sights and sounds of the ocean, including barking sea lions and rushing tides, define the daily experience.

Amenities & Park Features

Travelers should note that Allison Point provides a dry camping experience, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. The park features paved parking pads, vault toilets, and trash receptacles. Because the area is a high-traffic corridor for local wildlife, the use of bear-resistant containers is essential. While the park lacks a dump station or potable water on-site, these services are conveniently located a short drive away within the Valdez city limits.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw here is the incredible salmon fishing, particularly during the pink and silver salmon runs when the waters teem with fish. Just a short walk away, the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery offers a fascinating look at the fish ladder and local ecology. The area is also a premier destination for wildlife photography; it is common to see black bears, bald eagles, and harbor seals congregating near the shoreline to feast on the returning salmon.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and avid anglers who want front-row access to the water. If you enjoy a communal, active atmosphere and don't mind the absence of utility hookups, you will find this spot rewarding. It is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts who want to observe bears and marine life in their natural habitat, though it may not suit those seeking a quiet, secluded forest retreat.

Location is great for fishing, thats it. Camp sites are right off the road, no privacy. And no one cleans up after themselves so the sites are trashed

Pretty good little spot for free. Keep an eye on your gas tank. Someone came in the middle of the night and siphoned a half a tank out of our camper van.

Came in towing 30 ft trailer on Labor Day weekend. The campground is on the water side of the paved road but poorly marked. A wide shoulder along the road permits free camping and parking bordered by a steep cliff. The shoreline is covered with large slippery rocks. The tidal bore is roughly 10 ft. Black bears wandering freely along the road day and night. During the salmon runs expect combat fishing, especially at high tide. Snagging setups are lawful. There are run down vault toilets. Dumpsters are available. Access to shoreline is treacherous and ramps have unrepaired washouts from erosion. Still a memorable experience worth the trip.
