Almeda

Overview

Almeda County Park, managed by Josephine County, provides a rustic escape right on the banks of the legendary Rogue River in Southern Oregon. Known as a vital gateway for river runners and nature lovers, the park offers a peaceful environment where the rhythmic sound of flowing water replaces the noise of city life. This park is a staple for those seeking a rugged outdoor experience while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest's wild landscapes.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just downstream from the town of Merlin, the park is nestled within the dramatic Rogue River Canyon. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep, forested hillsides and unique rocky outcrops that define this region. It serves as a prime base camp for exploring the transition into the Wild and Scenic section of the river. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a dense canopy of Douglas firs and madrones, offering ample shade and a genuine sense of seclusion from the modern world.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers a variety of campsites that cater to RVers and tent campers alike, along with several yurts for those seeking a different stay. While Almeda leans toward a traditional camping experience, it provides essential comforts including accessible restrooms and showers. A major feature of the park is the paved boat ramp on-site, which allows for easy launching of rafts, drift boats, and kayaks. RVers should be prepared for a more primitive setup, as the park focuses on preserving the natural environment rather than providing extensive utility hookups.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Life at Almeda revolves around the river. Guests often spend their days whitewater rafting through the nearby Hellgate Canyon or fishing for world-class steelhead and salmon. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the surrounding Siskiyou National Forest is home to numerous hiking trails that offer stunning vistas of the canyon floor. The nearby community of Merlin provides access to local river outfitters and essential supplies, making it easy to gear up for a day on the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor adventurers and water sports enthusiasts who prioritize proximity to the river over resort-style luxury. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to unplug and spend quality time together in a natural setting. If you are an RVer who enjoys boondocking-style camping in a spectacular canyon environment, Almeda Park provides the perfect backdrop for your Southern Oregon journey, especially if you are planning a multi-day rafting excursion.

Had the most awesome stay in Yurt #2! The rafting from Hogs Creek to Almeda was so much fun! The park host CLAUDIA is the best. She went above and beyond to accommodate any/all needs for our entire group. Our group had the whole campground all weekend. Claudia had smiles and nice words for everybody. So appreciated all she did. There was no complaints from anybody in our group of over 100. Can't wait until next year to do it again!!!

We've camped here several times, it's our favorite place for tent camping! The newest park host (Claudia) is the absolute best!

Decent campsites on a beautiful section of the Rogue. Great water above and below for begining and intermediate boaters. I’ve been to prettier campsites, but never had kinder , more engaging camp hosts. Claudia went above and beyond. I would go as far as to say I was inspired by this lovely lady. The authentic and insightful life, this camp host is leading gives me hope that I can break free of the rigmarole of my own tedious existence and embrace my true passions of the outdoors and the water. Good stuff Claudia! Keep that up!

I had the best weekend camping at the Almeda campground. I usually like to camp off grid since my past experiences with camp hosts aren’t always pleasant and can really make or break the trip. Claudia was by far the best camp host I have ever had. The first day we arrived she came and spoke with us and I felt like she was a part of our group. She welcomed our dogs and played with them even though our dogs are much louder than we prefer. She was there to answer any questions and anytime we needed anything she was right there. Her energy was so kind and beautiful it was a breath of fresh air for a trip I was worried wasn’t going to go well due to civilized camping. She upheld the rules but also made everything fun. I asked if she planned on remaining the camp host to which she said she should be for a while. I will be returning to Almeda next year and any year after because the camp spot is so well maintained, the section on the Rogue is calm and beautiful for swimming, but most importantly I felt welcomed and comfortable because of the host. 😊 Thank you Claudia for making the weekend wonderful. I’m glad to have met you and look forward to seeing you next year!

My favorite camp on the recreation section of the Rogue River in Oregon. Potable water, river front camps, green grass, treasure hunts, clean toilets, friendly helpful hosts, fire wood, ice, and boater love. My only dislike is the generators from the RVs and what not from time to time.
