Amistad NRA/277 North

Overview

The 277 North Campground offers a quiet, primitive escape within the sprawling Amistad National Recreation Area. Located near the border in Del Rio, Texas, this National Park Service site provides a starkly beautiful landscape where the desert meets the water. It is a preferred choice for travelers who value natural solitude over modern luxuries, offering a front-row seat to the dramatic sunrises and sunsets that define the South Texas horizon.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on a peninsula along the northern reaches of the Amistad Reservoir, the park is surrounded by limestone cliffs and low-lying desert scrub. The elevation provides expansive water views that contrast sharply with the rugged, arid terrain. Its location off Highway 277 makes it accessible while remaining far enough from the city center of Del Rio to maintain a peaceful, remote atmosphere characteristic of the Rio Grande basin.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area, meaning there are no water, electric, or sewer hookups at the sites. However, the park features well-maintained paved parking pads that can accommodate various RV lengths. Each site is equipped with a covered picnic table to provide shade from the Texas sun, along with a fire ring and grill. A vault toilet is centrally located, and a functional boat ramp provides easy access to the reservoir for anglers and boaters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Amistad Reservoir, famous for its world-class bass fishing and clear blue waters. Visitors can spend their days exploring hidden coves by kayak or visiting the impressive Amistad Dam. For a change of pace, a short drive leads to the ancient rock art at Seminole Canyon State Park, or guests can explore the historic downtown area and local wineries within the city of Del Rio.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal fit for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking and off-grid living. It appeals specifically to anglers looking for convenient boat access and nature lovers seeking dark night skies for stargazing. If you prefer a rustic environment where the sound of the wind and water replaces the hum of a resort, this tranquil stopover is a perfect match for your travel style.

No water, no electric, just vault toilets, a covered table, grill and trash can. Still, at four dollars, it is not too bad. And even better, half off for seniors. Besides, there are usually some nice people down from the northern areas wintering here. Update: I believe that the per night fee has gone up to $6.00.

Nice little maintained camp grounds with individual covered pic nic tables and BBQs. 2 pit toilets. Water access about 1/4 mile from camp. Dog friendly. $6 a night credit/debit only. Generator ok from 6AM - 10PM

With the interagency pass the camping fee is $6 a night (normal fee, but no entry fee). The disability pass allows you to camp for $3. This site has 8 to 10 sites. A long walk to get a glimpse of the water. You are not launching kayaks from this spot with today's water levels. There were 4 to 5 people here in early February. Garbage service no other utilities.

Always pleased with our stays on government land. This is part of Amistad National Recreation Area. This campground is not free, but prices are low. $3 for Senior Passholders, and $6 for everyone else. Unfortunately, the water table is very low. At the boat ramp, you could put in a canoe or kayak, but I wouldn't recommend a motor boat.

I'd already seen one of the other camping areas and it just was like a big parking lot, so I hoped this one would be better, but I'm not impressed. 😕 It's just a bunch of campers clustered close together in the brush, and a fairly long walk down a boat ramp to even SEE any sign of the lake. Not even water available, just trash bins and vault toilet. No thanks... never again. Price is also now $6/night, $3 with pass.
