Andrus Lake State Forest Campground
Overview
Andrus Lake State Forest Campground offers a serene, back-to-basics camping experience in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula. Managed by the Michigan DNR, this destination is tucked within the Lake Superior State Forest, providing a quiet alternative to the region's busier commercial parks. Travelers come here to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of the wind through the pines and the gentle lapping of the lake water take center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Located just six miles north of Paradise, Michigan, this campground sits in a prime location for exploring the northeastern tip of the peninsula. The park is nestled along the eastern shore of Andrus Lake, a clear, 20-acre spring-fed lake. The surrounding environment consists of lush northern hardwoods and towering evergreens, creating a dense natural canopy. Its proximity to the shores of Lake Superior means visitors are never far from the dramatic coastal beauty of the Great Lakes.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state forest facility, the focus here is on a rustic camping environment rather than modern convenience. The park features 25 sites designed for tents and small-to-medium RVs or trailers. Amenities are intentionally limited to maintain the wilderness feel and include:
- Vault toilets for basic sanitation.
- A hand-pump well for fresh drinking water.
- A gravel boat launch for small watercraft.
- Individual fire rings and picnic tables at each site.
There are no electric or sewer hookups available, making it a true boondocking destination.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground serves as an exceptional home base for visiting Whitefish Point, home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and a world-renowned bird observatory. A short drive south brings you to the majestic Tahquamenon Falls State Park, where the Upper Falls stands as one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. On-site, guests can spend their days fishing for perch and northern pike or exploring the quiet hiking trails that weave through the surrounding state forest land.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize solitude and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. Due to the smaller site footprints and narrow roads, it is ideal for those with nimble rigs or truck campers. If you are a traveler who values scenic lake views, dark night skies for stargazing, and a quiet retreat away from the crowds of larger state parks, this campground is a perfect match for your Upper Peninsula adventure.

Sam, our host, was helpful, friendly and welcoming. It is a beautiful campground- well run, with clean pit toilets. Serene and natural.

One of the best campgrounds in the EUP with some of the best dining in the area. Try the brisket at The Inn. It's top-notch. And it's so peaceful at night with the sound of the whippoorwills and owls hooting and all kinds of wildlife I even heard there's an ol flying squirrel in the area 😂 if you're going camping don't give this place a pass it's well worth the stop

Camped here twice in October. Beautiful sunsets over the lake. No electricity? No problem.

Nice, quiet, right on the lake. But be prepared when you get out of your truck, the flying vampires are waiting for you!!

Cute, quaint little state forest campground. Not another soul to be seen so we picked the ideal spot to set camp for the weekend. We were there early November so the lack of people wasn't at all surprising.
