Anza-Borrego Desert

Overview

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park offers a premier desert experience for RVers in Borrego Springs, California. As the largest state park in the state, it encompasses over 600,000 acres of rugged badlands, palm oases, and cactus-covered hills. Staying here provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the California desert wilderness while enjoying established camping facilities. Whether you are visiting for the famous spring wildflower blooms or the quiet solitude of the winter months, this park offers an unparalleled connection to nature and wide-open spaces.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the eastern part of San Diego County, the park is completely surrounded by the International Dark Sky Community of Borrego Springs. The geography is incredibly diverse, ranging from low desert floors to high mountain ridges. RVers will find themselves nestled in a vast basin characterized by dramatic geological formations and sweeping vistas. The area is famous for its incredible stargazing opportunities, as the lack of light pollution provides a crystal-clear view of the Milky Way directly from your campsite every night.

Amenities & Park Features

The primary destination for RVers is the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground, which offers several sites with water and electrical hookups to accommodate modern rigs. The park provides essential facilities including clean restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a convenient dump station for wastewater management. Each site typically features a fire ring and a picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings. While it maintains a rustic feel, the presence of paved parking pads at many sites makes leveling your RV a straightforward process compared to remote backcountry camping.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, with the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail being a must-do hike that leads to a hidden fan palm oasis. Visitors often spend days exploring the Galleta Meadows sculptures, a collection of over 130 giant metal artworks scattered across the desert floor. For those with high-clearance vehicles, a trip to Font’s Point offers a breathtaking view of the Borrego Badlands at sunset. Seasonal wildflower viewing remains one of the most popular activities, drawing visitors from across the country to see the desert floor in bloom.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style luxuries. It is a perfect fit for dry campers and those who enjoy moderate hiking, birding, and wildlife watching in a serene environment. Because the park is exceptionally quiet, it suits travelers looking for a peaceful retreat away from highway noise and city crowds. If you value wide-open spaces and the ability to explore miles of desert trails right from your doorstep, this park is a top-tier choice.

The state park, because they are firmly under the spell of the radical environmentalist and the Democrats, have basically cut off access to most of the northern part of the park to all but the most hardy of hikers of which I am one so I thought I would post some photos of what others who aren't quite so fit used to be able to enjoy because they could drive their Jeeps back up into these areas but now can't. Seems like kind of a shame to me that only a very select few can enjoy these areas anymore, due to who knows what or why, but then again being under the control of radical environmentalists and the California Democrats means you don't have to answer the questions of what or why.

Amazing visitor center with plenty of interesting exhibits and park film. Amazing rangers to help you out too! Park stamps of the park and the Anza Trail are offered here as well as a junior ranger program (no age-limit, so anyone can do!). If you can, hit a star party for some astonishing night skies.

Don’t be fooled by the apparent lack of a building from the map! The visitor center is build as a cave! It’s very nice with plenty of great information, Anza Borrego merch and super friendly and helpful staff that pointed us to some great hiking trails

Great place! We stopped here first to get info on the various hikes in the area. Great visitor center and staff to answer all of the questions. The center also has great samples of the various cacti out front. $10 entrance fee to the park/carload. Very clean restrooms with soap and paper towels! Picnic area both in the sun and in the shade around the center. Ample parking on dirt
