Apostle Islands Area Campground serves as a peaceful basecamp for those exploring the rugged beauty of Lake Superior’s south shore. Nestled in a wooded landscape just outside the charming town of Bayfield, this park offers a balanced blend of modern conveniences and natural surroundings. It is a family-owned destination where the focus remains on providing a quiet, organized atmosphere for travelers seeking to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in Bayfield, WI, a town often celebrated as the gateway to the Apostle Islands. The surroundings are defined by lush forests and the cool, refreshing breezes of Lake Superior. Being located slightly inland allows for a more secluded, peaceful feel while remaining just minutes away from the bustling waterfront. The area is also famous for its scenic orchards and berry farms, which provide a picturesque backdrop and local flavor during the summer and autumn seasons.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests can choose from a variety of site types, including full hookup sites that accommodate large rigs with both 30 and 50-amp service. The grounds feature a refreshing outdoor swimming pool, which is a rare and highly valued amenity in this northern climate. Other practical features include clean, modern bathhouses, laundry facilities, a playground for children, and a basketball court. The sites are well-spaced and often shaded by mature trees, ensuring a sense of privacy and a genuine woodland camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, where visitors can embark on boat tours or kayak through famous sea caves. The ferry to Madeline Island is only a short drive away, offering miles of beaches, hiking, and local history to explore. For those seeking entertainment, the nearby Big Top Chautauqua hosts a variety of musical performances. Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate the proximity to Meyers Beach and the various hiking trails that wind along the dramatic Lake Superior shoreline.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for family vacationers and retirees who value a quiet, clean, and orderly environment. It appeals most to those who want a reliable and comfortable home base while spending their days exploring the islands or attending local festivals. Fantastic RV Park in a Great Location. Lots to see/do in the nearby areas and great roads for motorcycle cruising. Campgrounds is very nicely spread out with "themed" cabins (pirate ship, schoolhouse, connestoga, etc.). Has a clean pond and beach for swimming and mini golf. Close to Sea Caves National Park and other activities. Would definitely go back to this Campground.

Apostle Islands Area campground is one of the best run and maintained campgrounds we have spent time at! Smartly designed for travel trailers with easy pull through and full services. Water, power, sewer hookups all excellent and well maintained. Area WiFi decent. Bathroom/shower house impeccable and clean! Fantastic staff. Beautiful wooded area with amazing view of Lake Superior. The place to stay if visiting Big Top Chitaqua ( music venue on Mount Ashwabay) - free shuttle ride round trip from campground. Easily accommodated our 30’ toyhauler with ground space for UTV and scooter. Highly recommended!

This large park is set on a hillside with level pull through full hook up sites cut into the hillside. “Downtown” is only a couple of miles away. The cabins were unique with each having an external fantasy theme (see photos). I did see the inside of any of the cabins. The cabins are situated around a swimming pond. The office carries and excellent selection of hard by the scoop ice cream. The bathhouse features spacious modern toilet/shower suites. The odd thing was the shower head is on the high ceiling pointed straight down. The head is adjustable if you can reach it and everybody has their preferred setting. I stood on the small bench to adjust the head to my preference which was pretty precarious. I’m sure management was wondering how they got changed.

We camped at Apostle Islands Area Campground in July 2025. This was our first time camping here. The campground is immaculate. You can tell that the staff take great pride in their property, and they are all very friendly. We stayed in the newer campground area-sites 60 - 100. Sites are terraced and spacious. The bath house had a laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers. All machines worked perfectly. Other amenities included a swimming pond, miniature golf course, themed cabins and a store with supplies, firewood, and amazing ice cream. Check in at our section was a breeze as there is a kiosk with envelopes to grab when you arrive. There is also a brewery nearby. Would definitely return.

This campground is AMAZING!! It is one of the nicest campgrounds I have ever been to. Everything, including the bathrooms and the grounds, is kept super clean. The entire campground is wonderful, from the RV sites to the specialty cabins, and there are so many little details that make this place special. There is a nice playground, putt putt golf, and a swimming pond. We stayed in a rustic cabin, which is in a very secluded area surrounded by nature. The cabin was adorable, and the mattresses were comfy. It was a very quiet campground and it felt very safe. It's in a beautiful area and close to Bayfield. The owners are very friendly and nice people. I absolutely recommend this campground and would give it 10 stars if that was an option. If we ever make it back to Bayfield, this is #1 on our list.
