Arapaho-Roosevelt/Arapaho Bay

Overview

Arapaho Bay is a scenic getaway located within the Arapaho National Recreation Area. Nestled on the eastern tip of Lake Granby, this campground offers a rustic escape for those who want to immerse themselves in the high-country beauty of the Colorado Rockies. It is managed by the US Forest Service and provides a tranquil environment where the sounds of the lake and rustling lodgepole pines take center stage for an authentic camping experience.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at the foot of the Continental Divide, providing a dramatic backdrop of rugged peaks and dense evergreen forests. Its position along the shores of the state's second-largest body of water makes it a prime spot for water-based recreation. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest, where the air is thin and crisp, and the local wildlife, including frequent moose and osprey sightings, is abundant.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the park focuses on a natural experience rather than modern luxury. There are no hookups available, so RVers should come prepared for dry camping with full tanks and charged batteries. However, the sites are spacious and include picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings under the stars. On-site facilities are basic but well-maintained, featuring vault toilets and seasonal hand pumps for drinking water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities right outside their door. The Roaring Fork Trail is easily accessible for hikers looking to explore the backcountry wilderness and nearby waterfalls. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake famous for its kokanee salmon and lake trout. For those willing to drive a short distance, the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park is nearby, offering world-class scenic drives and high-alpine vistas.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural scenery and outdoor access over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking to disconnect from technology and enjoy lakeside recreation in a quiet, rustic setting. If you enjoy waking up to the smell of pine needles and having mountain trails just minutes away, Arapaho Bay provides a classic Colorado high-country experience for your next road trip.

Good option for a reservation campground. NOT too in eachothers spaces, which is nice. Some very nice spots right along the shore. Great camping if you like to tavel with kayak(s) and do some fishing.

One of my favorite campgrounds we visited on our road trip to Colorado. The drive out to this spot is gorgeous. There's also a nice hike around the lake nearby too.

My husband and I stayed up here one night and it was great! We got in late and were able to grab spot 7. It wasn’t until the morning did we see how beautiful the place was! We saw several deer and moose, even a mama with her calf! The campground host, Paula, came by and checked in with us. She was so helpful! We had forgotten to pack our coffee (doh!) and she brought us some and a map of the area! I wish we had a reservation to stay the whole weekend! The spots on the main road (not in the loop) are great!

It is a nice campground with mountain and lake around. Many trailhead you can pick. We stayed there nights. Day one hiking is from monarch lake trailhead to crater lake. The view on this trail is changed with the elevation, with creek, falls, mountain, and forest. Trail is well maintained. Day two is from roaring fork trailhead to wantanga lake. This trail is more climbing up up. Trail is slippery but. You need to be careful and wear good hiking shoes. It's a great campground definitely. You can also go easy trail around the lake or fishing.

I stayed at site 28 on the Moraine Loop. I was right across from the camp host who was very nice and fun to talk too. I wish the pads weren’t so rocky as my sleeping pad was not the thickest but it was quiet.
