Arapaho-Roosevelt/Camp Dick
Overview
Camp Dick is a historic and highly sought-after destination located within the sprawling Roosevelt National Forest. Originally established as a camp for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this site has evolved into a premier getaway for those seeking an authentic mountain experience. The campground is situated in a wide, glacially carved valley where the Middle St. Vrain Creek flows directly through the property, providing a serene atmosphere and the soothing sound of rushing water throughout the day and night.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside the small mountain town of Ward, Colorado, the park sits at an impressive elevation of 8,600 feet. The geography is characterized by dramatic valley walls and a lush canopy of lodgepole pine, aspen, and subalpine fir trees. Its proximity to the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway makes it an easy yet spectacular drive for RVers, offering some of the most iconic views of the Continental Divide found anywhere in the Front Range region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional National Forest site, Camp Dick offers a rustic experience focused on natural beauty rather than modern utilities. There are no hookups available, making it a destination for self-contained RVs and those who enjoy dry camping. The park features 41 campsites, many of which are spacious back-in sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings. Guests have access to vault toilets and drinking water via hand pumps, ensuring the basic necessities are met while maintaining a primitive wilderness vibe.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the immediate access to the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The Middle St. Vrain Trailhead begins right at the edge of the campground, offering miles of hiking and equestrian trails. For those with high-clearance vehicles, the area is famous for its rugged 4WD roads that lead deeper into the backcountry. Fishing enthusiasts often frequent the creek for brook trout, while the nearby Brainard Lake Recreation Area provides stunning alpine vistas and additional lakeside recreation just a short drive away.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize proximity to trailheads and wilderness over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect match for nature photographers and hikers who want to be the first ones on the trail in the morning. If you are looking for a quiet, off-grid escape where you can disconnect from technology and reconnect with the rugged beauty of the Colorado Rockies, Camp Dick is an excellent choice for your next trip.

Amazing campground! It was busy on a fall weekend, but just added to the experience. They have a concrete walk path along the beautiful river. The camphosts are great! The pit toilets are CLEAN! Even had air fresheners! Saw 3 Moose next to camp! Definitely recommend this campground and only a short half hour drive from busy Estes Park.

Great great campground! Water was off but it was October so understandable!! Mostly quiet and peaceful but there was quite a few off-road vehicles that drive thru going to trail at end of campground! Wasn't terrible but I heard it's pretty busy during the summer! Creek runs right beside quite a few spots and there's a few trailheads right in campground! Overall I loved it! Clean, amazing camp host, I want to go back! This was site 25!

Great little campsite! The drive up is lovely, there are plenty of campsites with decent space between each one. Great spot to go stargazing!
