Arapaho-Roosevelt/Kelly Dahl

Overview

Kelly Dahl Campground, managed by the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience. Perched at an elevation of 8,600 feet, this rustic destination provides a peaceful retreat amidst lodgepole pines and aspen trees. It is a favorite for those who value natural beauty and a quiet atmosphere over resort-style luxuries. The campground serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the rugged terrain and unique local culture found in the surrounding high country.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of the eclectic mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, the park is located along the iconic Peak to Peak Highway. This scenic byway is famous for its breathtaking views of the Continental Divide and stunning fall foliage. The campground is nestled within a dense forest, providing ample shade and a sense of seclusion. Visitors often enjoy the crisp mountain air and the opportunity to spot local wildlife like mule deer or elk wandering through the pines.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest site, the amenities here focus on the essentials for a true outdoor experience. The park features vault toilets and several hand-pumps for potable water, though visitors should arrive prepared for dry camping. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. While there are no electric or water hookups, the well-spaced sites provide a level of privacy that modern RV resorts often lack.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless activities just minutes away. The town of Nederland offers unique shopping, dining, and the famous Carousel of Happiness. Hikers and backpackers can easily access the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which boasts some of the most spectacular alpine lakes and jagged peaks in the state. Additionally, the southern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is within a reasonable driving distance, making day trips to the park’s higher elevations highly accessible.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prefer a rugged, back-to-basics lifestyle. It is a top choice for travelers seeking a serene forest environment rather than the bustle of a commercial campground. Because some sites may be tight, it is best suited for small to mid-sized rigs. If you are looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature, this high-altitude haven is exactly where you belong.

Campground was nice and clean. Friendly camp host. Our site was next to playground and it was noisy sometimes. But if you have kids it would be great for them.

Rode through on a Saturday in August, lucked out with an open site. The spot was perfect and the bathrooms were clean. We didn't see the host once. We even stopped by to buy some firewood, they were gone. We wound up running into Nederland to buy wood at Ace hardware. Minus 1/2 star for lack of staffing.

The camp hosts really work hard to keep everything sparkling clean. Sites are spaced out nicely. Loved our 3 days here

Beautifully maintained site by Ann and her husband. We also met Chris Harvey, the site project manager (I believe that is his title) who was very gracious and gave us some wood he didn’t need. At 8400 ft in elevation, bring your hat and gloves in May.
