Arapaho-Roosevelt/Stillwater

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Stillwater Campground, nestled within the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest, serves as a premier basecamp for exploring the Arapaho National Recreation Area. Located at an elevation of 8,300 feet, this facility offers a rugged yet accessible mountain experience for those looking to immerse themselves in the Colorado high country. Visitors are greeted by sweeping views of Lake Granby and the surrounding mountain ranges, providing a deep sense of place while remaining conveniently close to the amenities of the town of Granby.

Location & Surroundings

The campground sits along the scenic south shore of Lake Granby, the largest of the Great Lakes of Colorado. The landscape is characterized by open sagebrush hills and native grasses, which ensures that almost every site offers an unobstructed view of the water and the towering Indian Peaks. Its strategic location provides easy access to the western gateway of Rocky Mountain National Park, making it a perfect stop for travelers planning to traverse the iconic Trail Ridge Road.

Amenities & Park Features

Stillwater is a well-maintained facility that caters to those seeking a more rustic, nature-focused stay. While this is primarily a dry-camping destination, the park offers spacious sites that are notably big-rig friendly, a feature often difficult to find in forest service locations. Essential amenities include clean vault toilets, seasonal drinking water from hand pumps, and trash collection. Each site is thoughtfully equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening campfires under the clear sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation here revolves around the water, with boating and fishing being the primary draws for visitors. Anglers frequently visit the lake for its famous lake trout and kokanee salmon. Just a short drive away, travelers can explore the charming boardwalks of Grand Lake or hike the lush, shaded trails surrounding Monarch Lake. For wildlife enthusiasts, the surrounding meadows are prime spots for viewing moose, elk, and osprey, especially during the early morning hours.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a primitive camping environment over a commercial resort experience. It is a top choice for water sports enthusiasts who want immediate access to boat launches and shorelines. Families who enjoy stargazing and a quieter, more natural atmosphere will find Stillwater to be a refreshing retreat, provided they are prepared for a peaceful experience without the distraction of modern hookups.

We've camped at several campsites throughout Colorado and this location is among the top five. The camp site was easy to locate and they layout was great. Our pad was large with a picnic table and fire pit nearby. There was a restroom up the trail or two very clean portable restrooms next to us with a potable drinking faucet in between. The camp host did not sell firewood but gave us a great suggestion of where to get some. The lake was very low, not sure if because of the drought or because they had drained it for winter months but it looked bleak. Noise level was moderate, we were close to the highway and can hear cars pass. Black birds woke us up like roosters croaking in the morning. Didn't see too much wildlife just you're occasional chipmunk, humming bird, and robins. There were several trail hikes within the campground, and if you walk on the road watch out for on coming vehicles. I highly recommend staying here. The mountain views and night sky is phenomenal

Had reservations for handicap site so we were told and was told it was 35 feet.We arrive and the site wasn't handicap complient our 20 foot trailer would have fit but not our truck. No restroom close by.It had stairs down to table and firepit. The host tried to make it right by giving us another site which was blocked off so we backed in only to find out the electric box was broken. Not happy at all. The host didn't even come out to site to greet us. Then to top it off the reservoir was being drained and we didn't get notice about that. Never will we go there very disappointed.

Just stopped in to dump and get potable water $10. The sites fill up fast on the weekend. There is power and water at certain sites. Others are just for dry or tent camping. There is a boat ramp to the lake. It's GORGEOUS here!!!

Great campground. Clean restrooms. Nice views. Not a lot of shade open to wind but sites were spread out plus vegetation boarders for privacy.

Site way too small. They ask the size of your equipment, including vehicle. No place to park the truck. But we could park in overflow about 1/2 mile away. Or pay to park in the unused site across the street. Plus picnic table, is bad repair, is down a bunch of stairs. NO PLace to set up dog yard. Nice view but would not stay here again
