Arapaho-Roosevelt/West Lake

Overview

West Lake Campground offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Located at an elevation of 8,200 feet, this destination provides a cool, pine-scented retreat from the summer heat. Unlike many forest service sites, it provides a blend of rugged beauty and essential comforts, making it a popular choice for RVers seeking a peaceful forest setting without being completely off the grid.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Red Feather Lakes area, the park is surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and rocky outcroppings. The campground sits directly adjacent to the glassy waters of West Lake, offering stunning sunrise views. Its proximity to the small village of Red Feather Lakes means travelers are never too far from basic supplies while still feeling immersed in the Colorado wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 35 campsites, several of which are equipped with electric hookups, a significant advantage for RV travelers in a national forest. While there are no sewer or water hookups at individual sites, guests have access to potable water and vault toilets throughout the grounds. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, providing the perfect setup for evening campfires under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here. The lake is a haven for trout fishing and non-motorized boating, including kayaking and canoeing. Hikers can explore the nearby Mount Margaret Trail or visit the neighboring Dowdy Lake for more expansive water views. For a unique cultural experience, the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya is just a short drive away, offering a serene place for reflection.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and anglers who appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for small to mid-sized RV owners who want the national forest experience with the convenience of electricity. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of wind through the pines and spending your days by the water, this park fits your travel style.

Camp host was great to work with me for a first come first served site before check-in. Manhattan Road was fine for pulling 26’ travel trailer although the transmission worked hard to pull as the first 2 miles is steep.

We love this place! From some of the spots you can see traffic during the day, but at night it's really quiet and it's balanced out by being able to walk to the little store for anything that might have been forgotten. This lake allows both fishing and non-powered things like paddleboards and kayaks, but no swimming.

Very friendly camp hosts. Very clean, a short walk to the lake, and has spectacular views! We didn't want to leave.

I thought by leaving on a Thursday night, right as school is starting that I would have a chance to get a first come first serve spot. If you are going to bother with this spot make sure you get a reservation. But even then I would be hesitant after my experience. When I arrived at the campground, it wasn't obvious that the campground was full. There were 2 empty spots and I parked in one. I got out to go pay for the spot. I walked with my dog to the entrance where the campground manager was camping. I asked him how I could pay for the spot. He asked what spot, and I replied and he said “That spot is reserved, there are no more first come first serve spots. You need to vacate the property.” So I say “Thanks” and turned around. I am walking back to the car. I am clearly leaving. I am on the phone with my buddy who was going to meet me here. The campground manager followed me back to my car in a golf cart. And he says “See that spot is reserved. You need to leave.” as he points to a tiny non-noticeable piece of paper that I could barely see 15 feet away from it. I replied “I am leaving, you don’t need to be a jerk about it." He then sped off in his golf cart. A couple suggestions I have are - one if someone is clearly walking to their car to leave, give them a chance to leave before harassing them. My second suggestion is to mark the reserved spots with a laminated neon paper that says that it is reserved. That way it is more obvious to the folks that try to get first come first serve spots.
