Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area/Hecla Junction Campground

Overview

Hecla Junction Campground serves as a premier gateway to the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area and the stunning Browns Canyon National Monument. Nestled along the banks of the Arkansas River, this destination offers a rugged, authentic Colorado experience for those seeking proximity to world-class whitewater. It is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, ensuring a well-maintained but primitive camping environment that prioritizes the natural landscape and the spirit of the American West.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly 15 miles north of the vibrant town of Salida, Colorado, the campground is positioned at the end of a winding road that descends into a dramatic river canyon. The surrounding terrain is characterized by high-desert flora, towering granite cliffs, and the constant, rhythmic sound of the rushing water. As the primary take-out for Browns Canyon, the area remains vibrant with activity during the peak summer days while offering incredibly peaceful, star-filled nights.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic facility designed for self-contained RVers and adventurous tent campers. You will find clean vault toilets and hand-pumped water stations, but there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. Each spot features a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings under the sky. A major highlight of the park is the professional-grade boat ramp and staging area, which makes it incredibly convenient for those bringing rafts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heartbeat of this specific region in Chaffee County. Travelers can enjoy world-class trout fishing right from the rocky shore or explore the rugged hiking trails that weave through Browns Canyon National Monument. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Salida offers charming boutique shops, local breweries, and riverside dining. Many visitors also make the short drive to the nearby hot springs for a relaxing soak after a day on the river.

Who This Park Is Best For

Hecla Junction is ideal for the adventurous RVer who prefers scenic beauty over resort amenities. If your travel style involves whitewater rafting, fly fishing, or exploring high-altitude wilderness corridors, this park is a perfect match. It is best suited for those with solar power setups or generators who enjoy a dry camping feel while still having the structure of a designated site. It is a haven for travelers looking to reconnect with nature and disconnect from the digital world.

The location on the map is the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area OFFICE. Is there a different place to review the actual Recreation Area? Or should I not review the office here? Google Maps can be really confusing sometimes. The office (headquarters?) area open to the public is quite small. There are a lot of tourist information brochures available and a very small gift shop space. There is a computer/kiosk/thingy OUTSIDE the office where you can buy a Colorado State Parks Pass. There's also a educational/interactive area aimed at kids. It is free to enter this building.

Along Highway 50, west of Cañon city... a beautiful stop... across from Five Points Campsite... Bathrooms to relieve yourself and picnic tables to relax after 😄... Try to spot the big horn sheep when the river isn't grasping your attention... Definitely going to throw a line out and see what is biting... Could spend hours hiking around

Lovely spot for all things outdoors! Great views, picnic tables and play places for the kiddos with a small amphitheater. The river is quiet, soothing and clean. Plenty of shopping and restaurants around for fun.

The AHRA (not to be confused with the American Hot Rod Association) should be your first stop for information regarding the Arkansas River. The staff are courteous and professional. There are brochures galore for hiking, bicycling, and river activities.
