Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area/Railroad Bridge Campground
Overview
Railroad Bridge Campground offers a rugged, authentic Colorado experience within the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. Situated right on the banks of the Arkansas River, this park is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. It serves as a prime destination for those seeking a primitive camping experience amidst the stunning scenery of the Collegiate Peaks. This location provides a gateway to the diverse landscapes of Chaffee County, where visitors trade modern luxuries for direct access to one of the most popular river corridors in the United States.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly seven miles north of Buena Vista, the campground is nestled at the base of dramatic granite cliffs. The Arkansas River flows directly past the sites, providing a constant soundtrack of rushing water. The landscape is characterized by high-desert flora and rocky outcrops, offering expansive views of the surrounding mountains. The elevation here provides cooler summer temperatures, and its proximity to the Midland Trail system makes it a central hub for those exploring the high-country backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive facility, the amenities at Railroad Bridge are focused on the essentials for dry camping. The park features 14 individual campsites, each equipped with a fire ring and a heavy-duty picnic table. While there are vault toilets available for guest use, there is no potable water, trash service, or electricity provided on-site. The layout is designed to harmonize with the environment, and RVers should arrive with full freshwater tanks and prepared for a pack-it-in, pack-it-out waste policy to protect the local ecosystem.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the river itself, as the campground sits adjacent to a major whitewater rafting launch site. Anglers will find excellent gold-medal fishing opportunities for brown and rainbow trout just steps from their site. For those who prefer land, the nearby Fourmile Recreation Area provides miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. The area is a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts, and the charming downtown of Buena Vista is just a short drive away for local dining and mountain supplies.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize outdoor recreation and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is a favorite for whitewater enthusiasts and anglers who want to maximize their time on the water. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a rushing river and waking up to mountain views, this is your spot. Because the sites vary in size, it is best suited for small to medium-sized rigs or van lifers looking for a peaceful, riverfront retreat away from the crowds.

This was a very lovely campground. Although I stayed in dispersed camping (rapid # 4) I had spent a lil time here at the railroad bridge. Met a park ranger, Mike, he was extremely friendly and helpful with my situation. This campground was very well maintained and the bathrooms were stocked and also clean. Thank you!

The county road does run right by but traffic is not bad at all. The road in has some spectacular views and surprise tunnels. Right next to the Arkansas river and good shoreline to swift water fish. Panning is fun for the persons not wanting to fish. Dry camp despite the high traffic during the day.

This campground is a gem of the Buena Vista area. Great access to the river, very scenic location, and a bit off the beaten trail. The tent sites are almost all walk-in. Some of them are very close to each other. We stayed in 1411, which was a bit more private, if you don’t mind being a little farther from the river. The riverside sites were gorgeous — and site 1413 has access to a little “beach”! — but they were much less private and spacious. I would recommend the walk-in tent sites over the drive-in ones, since they are more removed from car and bus traffic (rafting companies put in and out all day, and they utilize the picnic area for lunch). Be aware that this campground has no water, bear lockers, or trash collection. We filtered our water from the river. I loved my stay here and I hope to be back again soon!

If I had not already set up my camp, I would have stayed here. This is a great area, easy access to the river, changing rooms, and restrooms. The bridge is fun to explore and great for photography. The views of the surrounding hills and mountain range are fabulous. Great place to teach your kids how to gold pan. Definitely recommended this site.

It's a nice campground. Not all of the spots have trees so be prepared to bring shade. The bathrooms were in good condition and were well stocked with toilet paper. There isn't any potable water so bring water, also. No complaints... And the views of the mountains are great!
