Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area/Rincon Campground

Overview

Rincon Campground serves as a premier riverside destination within the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. Situated along a scenic stretch of the Arkansas River, this facility offers a primitive camping experience that prioritizes natural beauty and outdoor recreation over modern luxuries. Managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, it provides a tranquil base for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the high-desert landscapes and rugged mountain scenery of the Arkansas River Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive east of Salida, Colorado, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 7,100 feet. The landscape is defined by dramatic canyon walls, pinon-juniper woodlands, and the rushing waters of the river. Its position along Highway 50 makes it easily accessible, yet the proximity to the water creates a distinct sense of seclusion. The 360-degree mountain views and frequent sightings of bighorn sheep make this location a visual highlight for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Amenities & Park Features

Rincon is a dry-camping facility, meaning there are no electrical or water hookups at the sites. RVers should arrive prepared with full fresh water tanks and sufficient battery power. The campground includes the following features:

  • Level gravel parking pads suited for small to medium rigs
  • Clean on-site vault toilets
  • Individual fire rings and picnic tables at every site
  • A popular public boat ramp for direct river access

While potable water is not available directly at the campground, visitors can access water and dump stations at the AHRA Visitor Center in nearby Salida.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Arkansas River, world-renowned for its Gold Medal trout fishing and exhilarating whitewater rafting. Guests are minutes away from Browns Canyon National Monument, which offers incredible hiking trails and unique geological formations. For those seeking culture and dining, the historic downtown of Salida is less than ten miles away. Visitors can also explore the nearby Monarch Pass or soak in the local hot springs that dot the Chaffee County landscape.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who appreciate a quiet, rustic environment. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts, specifically those interested in kayaking, fly-fishing, or mountain biking. Because of the limited site lengths and lack of hookups, it is best suited for those in smaller travel trailers, camper vans, or truck campers. If you value direct river access and starry nights over resort-style amenities, Rincon is an excellent choice for your Colorado adventure.

The location on the map is the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area OFFICE. Is there a different place to review the actual Recreation Area? Or should I not review the office here? Google Maps can be really confusing sometimes. The office (headquarters?) area open to the public is quite small. There are a lot of tourist information brochures available and a very small gift shop space. There is a computer/kiosk/thingy OUTSIDE the office where you can buy a Colorado State Parks Pass. There's also a educational/interactive area aimed at kids. It is free to enter this building.

Along Highway 50, west of Cañon city... a beautiful stop... across from Five Points Campsite... Bathrooms to relieve yourself and picnic tables to relax after 😄... Try to spot the big horn sheep when the river isn't grasping your attention... Definitely going to throw a line out and see what is biting... Could spend hours hiking around

Lovely spot for all things outdoors! Great views, picnic tables and play places for the kiddos with a small amphitheater. The river is quiet, soothing and clean. Plenty of shopping and restaurants around for fun.

The AHRA (not to be confused with the American Hot Rod Association) should be your first stop for information regarding the Arkansas River. The staff are courteous and professional. There are brochures galore for hiking, bicycling, and river activities.
