Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area/Salida East Campground
Overview
Salida East Campground offers a rustic and authentic Colorado experience nestled along the banks of the Arkansas River. Managed as part of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, this site is less about resort-style luxuries and more about providing a direct connection to the rugged beauty of the high desert landscape. It serves as an essential basecamp for those looking to immerse themselves in the outdoors while staying within a short drive of local community comforts. This is a place where the sound of the flowing river provides the evening soundtrack for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just east of the town of Salida, the campground features a landscape defined by sagebrush and cottonwoods. The site provides sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and immediate access to one of the most famous river corridors in the United States. Because the park is located in a transition zone between the riverbed and the desert, visitors should expect an open, sunny environment that captures the expansive Colorado sky. The high-altitude elevation ensures cool mountain nights even after warm, sunny summer days.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a dedicated dry-camping destination, meaning it is ideal for self-contained RVs looking for a peaceful stay. While you won't find sewer or electric hookups, the park provides essential primitive amenities like vault toilets, fire rings, and heavy-duty picnic tables at each site. The gravel pads are known for being relatively level and surprisingly big-rig friendly, accommodating larger motorhomes that might struggle in more cramped mountain campgrounds. Note that there is no potable water on-site, so filling your tanks beforehand is vital for a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw here is the Gold Medal fishing and world-class whitewater rafting available right at your doorstep. The campground features a dedicated boat ramp, making it a primary launch or take-out point for river enthusiasts. Just a few miles away, the charming downtown of Salida offers unique art galleries, local breweries, and soothing hot springs. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Monarch Pass and local mountain bike trails provide endless exploration opportunities for every skill level, from casual paths to technical descents.
Who This Park Is Best For
Salida East is the perfect choice for independent travelers who prioritize prime location and outdoor activity over modern hookups. It is particularly well-suited for rafters, kayakers, and anglers who want to be steps away from the water's edge. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping with the added security of a designated site, this park offers the peace and quiet you crave without sacrificing proximity to Salida's vibrant mountain culture, local dining, and convenient supply runs.

The location on the map is the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area OFFICE. Is there a different place to review the actual Recreation Area? Or should I not review the office here? Google Maps can be really confusing sometimes. The office (headquarters?) area open to the public is quite small. There are a lot of tourist information brochures available and a very small gift shop space. There is a computer/kiosk/thingy OUTSIDE the office where you can buy a Colorado State Parks Pass. There's also a educational/interactive area aimed at kids. It is free to enter this building.

Along Highway 50, west of Cañon city... a beautiful stop... across from Five Points Campsite... Bathrooms to relieve yourself and picnic tables to relax after 😄... Try to spot the big horn sheep when the river isn't grasping your attention... Definitely going to throw a line out and see what is biting... Could spend hours hiking around

Lovely spot for all things outdoors! Great views, picnic tables and play places for the kiddos with a small amphitheater. The river is quiet, soothing and clean. Plenty of shopping and restaurants around for fun.

The AHRA (not to be confused with the American Hot Rod Association) should be your first stop for information regarding the Arkansas River. The staff are courteous and professional. There are brochures galore for hiking, bicycling, and river activities.
