Ashley/Cedar Springs

Overview

Ashley and Cedar Springs offer a gateway to the high-desert wonders of the Ashley National Forest. Situated near the shores of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, these sites provide a rugged yet accessible base for outdoor enthusiasts. The atmosphere is one of quiet immersion in nature, where the scent of Ponderosa pines and the expansive Utah sky define the experience. It is a place where the pace slows down, inviting travelers to trade digital screens for panoramic vistas of red rock canyons and deep blue waters.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Dutch John, UT, the park is perched above the southern end of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The surrounding terrain is a dramatic mix of steep cliffs, juniper-dotted hills, and stunning geological formations. Visitors are positioned perfectly to explore the transition from high plateau to deep river canyons. The elevation provides cooler summer temperatures compared to lower basins, making it a refreshing retreat for those traveling through the Northeastern Utah region during the warmer months.

Amenities & Park Features

This location leans toward a more traditional, natural camping experience with essential comforts. The sites feature paved parking spurs suitable for many RV sizes, along with picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. While it maintains a rustic charm, the park provides access to potable water and vault toilets. Its proximity to the Cedar Springs Marina ensures that visitors are never far from essential boating services and a small convenience store, balancing seclusion with necessary logistical support for longer stays.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is undoubtedly the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, famous for trophy lake trout and scenic boating. Just a short drive away, the Green River offers legendary fly fishing opportunities below the Flaming Gorge Dam. Hikers can explore the Rim Trail for breathtaking views of the canyon, while history buffs might enjoy visiting the dam's visitor center. The area is also a designated Dark Sky location, offering some of the most spectacular stargazing opportunities in the Western United States.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for avid anglers and boaters who want to be minutes away from the boat launch. It is a perfect fit for RVers who prefer a natural, forest-style setting over a manicured resort environment. Families who enjoy self-contained adventuring and photographers looking for iconic Western landscapes will find the location particularly rewarding. If you value quiet nights and outdoor access over luxury clubhouse amenities, this rugged corner of Utah will feel like a true wilderness home.

I really enjoyed this campground. I counted six well water stations with clean, drinkable water and three sets of vault toilets so neither are far away from where your site is. It was clean and quiet, fire rings had a grill top and some sites had charcoal grills as well. Mature, tall trees gave plenty of shade and it's extremely close to the marina and water.

When we went to Ceder Springs Campground, it was fun and well laid out. However the water line is broken and made things a bit more challenging. Hopefully it's fixed sooner.

The bathrooms were kept clean. There are no showers or hook-ups at this location, but it was well managed, well maintained, and clean. There is also fire wood bundles available here for $8.00 a bundle.

Love the campground and the host. WARNING: no water in this or any of the neighboring forest service campgrounds. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN WATER. There is a private RV camp that for a $6.00 fee, will let you fill up. That's how we got water for our travel trailer. Cedar Springs campground is peaceful and close to the marina. If you take the time and preplan, there's several scenic places nearby including the dam. We also drove to Vernal (about 45-60 minutes away). Awesome scenery and view points. We are not boaters. We were here Memorial weekend. We arrived on Saturday and had lots of rain. However, the rest of the time we had cool, dry weather.

We had a wonderful stay at Cedar Springs Campground! The grounds were private and shady. While the camp host wasn’t present during our visit, the bathrooms were very clean. We stayed at campsite 7. It was close to the bathroom and water spout. The lake view was also only about 20 steps away. With that being said, we could hear all of the music and fun happening at the marina. It didn’t bother us, but I’d you are looking for a quiet stay, the site might not be it. We loved it though! Would definitely stay again!
