Ashley/Deer Run

Overview

Ashley/Deer Run offers a practical and serene basecamp for travelers exploring the rugged landscapes of Northeastern Utah. Situated in the small community of Dutch John, this park provides a gateway to some of the most spectacular water and canyon features in the West. It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and its functional layout that prioritizes access to the great outdoors over commercial distractions, making it a favorite for regional adventurers.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perfectly positioned within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, surrounded by high-desert terrain and groves of juniper and pinyon pine. At an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, visitors enjoy cooler summer temperatures and remarkably clear night skies. The park is just minutes away from the massive Flaming Gorge Dam, which creates a striking contrast against the red rock cliffs and deep blue water of the reservoir.

Amenities & Park Features

Travelers will find well-maintained facilities designed for convenience after a long day on the water. The park features full hookup sites with both 30 and 50-amp service, accommodating a variety of rig sizes. On-site laundry facilities and clean shower houses are available to ensure a comfortable long-term stay. Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring, allowing guests to enjoy traditional campfire evenings under the expansive Utah stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the world-class fly fishing on the Green River, located just a short drive from the campground. Boating enthusiasts gravitate toward the Flaming Gorge Reservoir for its expansive waters and hidden coves. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Red Canyon Overlook offers breathtaking views of the gorge below, while numerous hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the surrounding Ashley National Forest lands.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and dedicated anglers who want a reliable, no-frills home base near the water. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the high desert. Clean, Has bathrooms stocked with TP, and flat spots for tents. The dock was great. Great spot to spend any amount of time at.
