Ashley/East Park
Overview
Ashley/East Park offers a serene high-elevation escape within the sprawling Ashley National Forest. Situated near the East Park Reservoir, this destination is a favorite for those seeking a rustic connection with nature. Unlike commercial resorts, this area emphasizes the raw beauty of the Uinta Mountains, providing a quiet atmosphere where the sound of wind through the pines replaces the noise of the highway. It serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the rugged terrain of northeastern Utah.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 30 miles north of Vernal, Utah, the park sits at an impressive elevation of roughly 9,000 feet. The landscape is dominated by dense stands of lodgepole pine interspersed with lush mountain meadows. Because of its height, the air remains crisp even during the peak of summer, offering a welcome reprieve from the desert heat found in the valley below. The nearby East Park Reservoir provides a stunning backdrop for morning walks and wildlife viewing.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service style experience, focusing on dry camping and primitive facilities. The park provides essential features for a comfortable off-grid stay:
- Vault toilets and seasonal potable water access.
- Individual sites with picnic tables and fire rings.
- Access to boat ramps for non-motorized watercraft.
While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, the spacious layouts can often accommodate various RV sizes. Travelers should prepare for a self-contained experience while navigating the mountain access roads with care.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the water, as visitors enjoy numerous recreational activities around the reservoir:
- Trout fishing and kayaking on the East Park Reservoir.
- Hiking and mountain biking through the High Uintas.
- Exploring the prehistoric wonders of Dinosaur National Monument.
A short drive away, travelers can explore world-renowned fossil beds or visit the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area for more expansive water sports and scenic overlooks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. If you enjoy boondocking or dry camping in a forest setting, you will feel right at home here. It is a fantastic choice for outdoor enthusiasts and families who want to unplug and spend their days fishing, hiking, or spotting local wildlife like elk and mule deer. Beautiful park. Grass needs mowed on walking path side. Playground looks fun. Pavilions are large.

Very large, multi use park area with large shade trees and beautiful, well maintained lawns. Expansive playground equipment, 2 large pavilions, a walking park area with a creek, pond and gazebo, very peaceful and wildlife if you pause long enough to take it all in. Baseball diamonds, clean restrooms, plenty of parking.
