Ashley/Firehole

Overview

Firehole Canyon Campground, nestled within the Ashley National Forest, offers a unique high-desert camping experience on the shores of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This location is famous for its iconic red rock chimneys and expansive water views that stretch across the Wyoming horizon. Unlike a typical suburban RV park, this is a destination for those who value natural beauty and outdoor recreation over manicured lawns and luxury facilities. It serves as a rugged basecamp for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the stark, beautiful landscape of the American West.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 30 miles south of Rock Springs, WY, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet. The surrounding landscape is characterized by stark desert vistas and dramatic geological formations that have been carved by wind and water over millennia. The sharp contrast between the deep blue reservoir water and the vibrant orange and red cliffs creates a breathtaking backdrop for every campsite. Travelers should prepare for high-desert conditions, which often include bright, sunny days and cool, refreshing evening breezes.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service facility, the amenities focus on providing the essentials for a comfortable dry-camping stay. The park is designed to accommodate various setups while maintaining a natural feel. Features include:

  • Paved parking spurs that provide a level surface for RVs and trailers.
  • Individual sites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings.
  • Access to seasonal potable water and well-maintained vault toilets throughout the campground.

A major highlight of the park is the paved boat ramp located within the complex, making it exceptionally easy for visitors to launch watercraft and enjoy a full day on the reservoir without leaving the area.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, which is renowned for exceptional lake trout fishing and a wide variety of water sports. Adventurous travelers can explore the Firehole Canyon scenic drive to view the towering rock spires and unique geology up close. Nearby, the Green River offers additional blue-ribbon fishing and rafting opportunities for those who prefer moving water. For a change of pace, the nearby city of Rock Springs provides full urban services, including shopping and local dining, just a short drive to the north.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy boondocking-style camping with the convenience of paved access. It is an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly boaters, kayakers, and photographers who want to capture the shifting light on the canyon walls. If you are looking for a quiet, scenic escape where you can trade Wi-Fi for stunning stargazing and rugged solitude, Firehole Canyon fits your travel style perfectly. This would’ve been 5 stars but we go there last night, paid at the iron ranger then find the gates to the campground locked. The recreation.gov site said open thru September. Since it was getting late we didn’t want to turn back and we boondocked in the day use area along with a few others. Gorgeous and quiet.

USFS campground contracted to American Land and Leisure. AL&L is ignoring this site. No evidence of a host (decrepit host site, weeds) in recent history despite signage to the contrary. Trash dumpsters were emptied, potable (?, not sock yet anyway hahaha) water available. Facility needs some TLC but great spot with killer views and access to the Green/Flaming Gorge. Sites are immediately adjacent to one another with parking side by side on the same paved pad and a partition wall in the sun and picnic shelter. Tent pads. Walk to baths which were locked sometime the afternoon of 9/2 after we paid. $33/night single site unless you have a discount. Not a bargain but access to water is nice in the desert. Night sky was fantastic. Rabbits, coyotes, one unconfirmed rattler down by the beach in the grass.

Well maintained forest service campground in a gorgeous (pun intended) setting in Flaming Gorge national recreation area! Clean bathrooms with flush toilets and a shower. Easy access to the lake for swimming or boating. Each campsite has a covered shelter with a picnic table, fire ring, and level parking pad. Well worth taking a scenic drive off the interstate to stop here. We’d definitely stay here again.

We were there July 20, 2025 for one night and a few updates needed. First this is a cool campground and the views are great. At the current time though there is no camp host and maintenance seems to have slacked off and the campground feels neglected. The bathrooms are clean enough and there was hot water at the showers but the lights are out of order. Some of the campsites need trimming of the trees as well. We never saw any USFS personal, And don't bother to make a reservation because there's no one to tag the sites to say they're reserved so people take sites as if they're fcfs. The dump station is in "working" order but the hose bib is leaking so the main valve is turned off (bring a wrench or pliers to turn it on. And the water is horrible so don't count on it to drink. As regards to being a "safe" place we totally felt safe here. There were about 5 other campsites occupied on a Sunday night.

Great place to go for solitude and great views! There was drinking water at the dump station, so fill-up before you roll-into camp. No electricity, but it cooled-off enough at night, so we didn’t need to use our generator to run the air conditioning. Nearby (~50 feet away) was a restroom with flushing toilets, though no showers. Very few other campers, only 3 other sites were occupied so we had the great views all to ourselves! T-Mobile didn’t have any service, so used our Starlink.
