Ashley/Pole Creek Lake
Overview
Tucked within the majestic expanse of the Ashley National Forest, the Ashley/Pole Creek Lake area offers a serene retreat for travelers looking to leave the modern world behind. Located near Whiterocks, UT, this destination is defined by its rugged beauty and high-elevation tranquility. It provides a classic camping experience where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of highway traffic, making it a premier choice for those seeking a high-altitude escape in the heart of the Uinta Mountains.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 9,000 feet, providing a cool sanctuary during the heat of the Utah summer. The surroundings are characterized by dense stands of lodgepole pine, shimmering aspen groves, and a scenic alpine setting that frames the small, quiet lake. The air is crisp, and the landscape is wild, offering a true sense of seclusion. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a mountainous wilderness that feels worlds away from the nearest town.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic, no-frills destination designed for campers who appreciate simplicity. The sites offer primitive dry camping, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. The park features basic essentials to facilitate a comfortable stay, including:
- Picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at each site
- Access to vault toilets maintained by the Forest Service
- Seasonal drinking water provided via a hand pump
- Standard parking spurs suitable for smaller trailers and campers
Travelers should arrive fully prepared with their own power sources and supplies to enjoy this backcountry environment safely.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. The lake itself is a popular spot for brook trout fishing, offering a peaceful environment for anglers to cast a line from the shore. Beyond the water, the area serves as a gateway to the High Uintas Wilderness, where miles of hiking and equestrian trails await. Nature photographers and birdwatchers will find ample opportunities to spot local wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and various high-country bird species that call these forests home.
Who This Park Is Best For
Ashley/Pole Creek Lake is ideal for self-contained RVers and overland travelers who prefer natural beauty over resort-style amenities. Because the access roads and sites are somewhat limited in size, it is best suited for small-to-medium rigs and truck campers. This location is a haven for nature enthusiasts and those seeking solitude, providing a quiet basecamp for exploring the vast backcountry of northeastern Utah without the distractions of modern connectivity.

Camping location is one of my favorites. Pohl Lake is near along with a great running creek. Camping spots are spaced decently. Bathrooms and trash bins provided.

This was a really nice place to tent camp. The site features well maintained pit toilets, fire rings with grates, and picnic tables. I really loved all the giant boulders everywhere. There are several lakes within hiking distance, some closer than others but all beautiful.
