Ashley/Skull Creek

Overview

Ashley/Skull Creek, situated in the heart of the Ashley National Forest, provides a serene high-elevation escape for travelers visiting the northeastern corner of Utah. Located at approximately 7,400 feet, this US Forest Service facility offers a distinct contrast to the lower desert regions. It serves as a quiet basecamp for those wanting to explore the expansive Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area without the crowds of more developed commercial sites.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled among a lush stand of Ponderosa pines, providing ample shade and a crisp mountain atmosphere that remains pleasant even during the summer months. Just a short drive from the small community of Dutch John, the park is positioned on a plateau above the Green River. The surrounding landscape features rugged geological formations and deep canyons, making it a visual haven for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate the high-country forest environment.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on a rustic camping experience. Travelers will find essential amenities such as vault toilets and potable water available during the peak season. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no individual utility hookups or dump stations on-site, the spacious layouts are designed to accommodate a variety of RV lengths in a natural, unpaved setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to Flaming Gorge Reservoir, famous for its boating, kayaking, and trophy lake trout fishing. Just minutes away, the Green River offers some of the finest blue-ribbon fly fishing in the United States. Visitors can also explore the Red Canyon Visitor Center for stunning cliffside views or hike the nearby forest trails that wind through the unique limestone and sandstone outcrops of the Uinta Mountains.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize nature and tranquility over resort-style luxuries like Wi-Fi or swimming pools. It is a perfect fit for anglers wanting early access to the river and hikers looking for cooler summer temperatures. If you enjoy boondocking-style amenities with the convenience of a designated, managed site, Ashley/Skull Creek offers an authentic mountain getaway away from the digital noise of modern life.

Trees around but still pretty warm in the summer. Didn't seem really busy.

We got here just before Memorial day so campground was almost empty except for a group of campers getting ready for the weekend. Campsites were clean and the toilets were also. We tent camped and our site was not level so I suggest sites away from 44 both for quiet and flat spots.

Our first time camping out. Easy access, bathrooms clean(!). Very peaceful, not over crowded.

Our family of 6 had a great time at this campground. It was so pretty and the stars were amazing at night. There were outhouses and toilet paper was provided. They keep them clean, but the flies were still an issue (but that’s to be expected). It was fun to be surrounded by animals. We saw chipmunks, squirrels, deer, antelope, and a moose with her babies. During the night, a cow was really close to our tent and mooing very loudly. We had a fire pit and a picnic table which was awesome. It made eating a lot easier. The only minor complaint I think anyone could really have was the occasional noise from someone driving by on the road. It really wasn’t that bad though. We loved this spot and will definitely camp here again!

Beautiful little campground. We took up sites 1,2 and 3. Plenty of space in all of them for 8-man tents with a little extra in site 3. The smaller vault toilet was really small and dark, but had very little smell. The bigger one further down was roomier, but a little more smelly. Overall a pleasant spot for a few days.
