Ashley/Upper Stillwater

Overview

The Ashley National Forest hosts the Upper Stillwater area, a high-elevation retreat tucked away in the Uinta Mountains. Located north of Mountain Home, UT, this destination is characterized by its dramatic mountain backdrop and the impressive Upper Stillwater Dam. It serves as a gateway for those seeking a primitive camping experience amidst towering pines and rugged peaks. This is a place where the natural sounds of the forest replace highway noise, offering a true mountain escape for travelers looking to disconnect from the grid.

Location & Surroundings

Perched at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet, the surroundings feature a beautiful mix of lodgepole pines and aspen groves. The park is situated near the scenic Rock Creek, providing a lush landscape that contrasts with the arid desert regions found elsewhere in Utah. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the High Uintas Wilderness, offering a vast expanse of protected land that ensures a quiet, secluded atmosphere far from the nearest urban developments or major highways.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service facility, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than resort-style luxury. The park offers rustic campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, suitable for smaller RVs and trailers. While you will not find electric, water, or sewer hookups, the facility provides essential vault toilets and potable water during the peak summer season. The layout is designed to maximize privacy, allowing visitors to feel fully immersed in the mountain environment without feeling crowded by neighboring sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Upper Stillwater Reservoir, which is a popular spot for non-motorized boating and fishing for various trout species. Hikers and backpackers can access the Rock Creek Trailhead, a major entry point into the wilderness for long-distance adventures or scenic day trips. The area is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, as it is common to spot moose, mule deer, and elk grazing in the nearby alpine meadows during the quiet early morning hours.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern conveniences. If you enjoy dry camping and want direct access to high-mountain recreation, this is a perfect fit. It appeals most to outdoor adventurers and anglers looking to escape the summer heat in a rugged setting. Due to the winding mountain access roads and specific site sizes, it is best suited for those with smaller to mid-sized rigs rather than large motorhomes.

At the risk of having too many people try to get a spot at this campground, I'll just tell you... This place is beautiful. There are no hookups at the sites, but there are flush toilets and good water available. It's completely paved. Fire rings and picnic tables at each site. It's kept very clean, which is highly unusual these days. Clearly the camp hosts do a great job, but the people who frequent this campground have also got to be doing their part.

Very nice campground. Quiet because it's at the end of a box canyon. Clean restrooms with flush toilets. Several water spigots are available. There is plenty of space between most sites.

Excellent campground. There's flush toilets, most sites have either a designated tent pad or RV space. Some sites are a little close together, but there's plenty of shade.

Beautiful campsites and very well maintained facilities made for a wonderful trip. The dam is a sight to behold, and the area has many stunning vistas and much to do. Campsites all have a very nice fire pit, a picnic table, as well as nearby trash pickup and drinkable water.
