Ashley/Whiterocks
Overview
Ashley/Whiterocks offers a serene escape into the heart of the Uinta Mountains. As part of the Ashley National Forest, this campground provides a rustic mountain experience for travelers looking to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in nature. The park is nestled along the banks of the Whiterocks River, where the sound of flowing water creates a peaceful backdrop for your stay. It is widely recognized for its scenic canyon views and refreshing summer temperatures.
Location & Surroundings
Located north of the small community of Whiterocks, Utah, the park is situated within a narrow canyon filled with ponderosa pines and Douglas fir trees. The high-elevation environment offers a dramatic contrast to the desert landscapes found elsewhere in the state. Travelers will appreciate the limestone cliffs that tower above the river, providing both natural shade and a sense of deep isolation from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here focus on the essentials of outdoor living. Visitors will find vault toilets and potable water seasonally available to ensure basic comforts are met during their mountain stay. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, which are perfect for evening gatherings. It is important to note that there are no utility hookups, making it an ideal destination for self-contained RVs or those who enjoy dry camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this location is the Whiterocks River, which is a popular spot for trout fishing and cooling off during the summer months. For hikers, the surrounding forest is crisscrossed with trails that lead deeper into the High Uintas Wilderness. Nearby, the Uinta Basin offers additional exploration opportunities, while the rugged terrain surrounding the park provides excellent chances for wildlife viewing and bird watching throughout the peak season.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for nature enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, primitive camping experience over a commercial resort. Because the access roads and sites are generally smaller, it is ideal for those with compact RVs or camper vans rather than large big-rigs. If you are a traveler who values solitude, stargazing, and direct proximity to mountain streams, this canyon retreat offers the perfect environment for your next Utah adventure.

Nice and quiet. No cell service.

Love this place! Very quiet and really out of the way. Not quite wilderness camping but close.

Nice little area for camping. Loved it! The only thing I would change are the camping spots are a little close but have to expect that with outhouses. (I'm used to middle of no where where you have to use a bush) but this site was nice.

Not bad. But the bathrooms where gross and full.

Healthy Mosquito Hatcheries feed endemic fish and can cause malaria but are better than the Bubonic Plague or Corona.
