Au Sable/Ambrose Lake

Overview

Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground provides a serene escape within the vast Au Sable State Forest near West Branch, Michigan. This destination is defined by its rustic charm and tranquil atmosphere, offering a departure from modern, commercialized RV resorts. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the park serves as a gateway to the region's rugged beauty, emphasizing a connection with the outdoors over modern technological conveniences. It is an ideal spot for those who view camping as a way to unplug and immerse themselves in the northern Michigan wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Ogemaw County, the campground is surrounded by mixed hardwoods and towering pines that provide excellent shade and a sense of privacy. The primary feature of the landscape is the clear water of Ambrose Lake, which creates a picturesque backdrop for the campsites. Its location offers easy access to the Ogemaw Hills region, known for its rolling terrain and expansive forest canopy that changes beautifully with the seasons, making it a favorite for autumn leaf-peepers and summer explorers alike.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state forest facility, the park focuses on essential amenities for self-contained travelers. The layout supports a traditional camping experience with limited but well-maintained facilities. Key features include:

  • Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the camping loops
  • Potable water available via a manual hand pump
  • Individual sites equipped with fire rings and sturdy picnic tables
  • A designated gravel boat launch for easy lake access

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers often visit for the Ogemaw Hills ORV Trail System, which provides miles of riding opportunities through the surrounding state forest. Fishing is a popular pastime on the lake, where anglers frequently find panfish and largemouth bass in the quiet waters. For those willing to drive a short distance, the famous Au Sable River offers world-class canoeing and trout fishing, while the nearby town of West Branch provides local dining, supplies, and unique shopping opportunities at the outlets.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for boondockers and off-grid campers who prefer silence and starlight over Wi-Fi and electrical hookups. Because the sites are nestled within the trees, it is best suited for truck campers, vans, and smaller travel trailers rather than massive luxury coaches. It is also a premier choice for outdoor enthusiasts who want direct access to motorized trails while maintaining a peaceful home base right at the water's edge.

Our hidden get away. My family absolutely adores this campground. It is quiet, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful. Rustic camp sites with several on the lake. Very well maintained. Bathrooms are kept clean and tidy. The lake is a great place to fish for bass, pike, and panfish. Nice concrete daily use boat launch with a small pier/dock The water is crystal clear. The surrounding forrest is a great place to walk and explore. It sits right on the trail for motorcycles, sxs, Snowmobiles, and 4 wheelers. A true 5 star rustic campground! Easy to maneuver large vehicles with trailers or campers. Some sites have extra/overflow parking. Another large parking lot for big outfits for daily use right on the trail head. We call it our secret getaway.

Easy check in. Generous space. Beautiful lake side site. Wish they didn't put boulders out to limit the size of rvs able to be in the site.

Very nice rustic state campground (no running water or electricity with bathroom's being two outhouses). Sites were spacious and well kept, overall nice quiet campground with both lake frontage sites and wooded sites. ORV friendly campground with very good trail riding right from it. On the lake (Ambrose Lake) with a boat launch right in the campground.
