Au Sable/Canoe Harbor
Overview
Au Sable/Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground offers a quintessential Northern Michigan camping experience. Situated directly on the banks of the Main Branch of the Au Sable River, this rustic retreat provides a peaceful escape into the wilderness. It is a favorite for those who value nature over modern luxuries, offering a simple layout where the sounds of the flowing river and rustling pines take center stage. This site serves as a vital stop for paddlers and anglers looking to immerse themselves in the region's rich outdoor heritage while enjoying a serene forest setting.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is located just southeast of Grayling, MI, tucked within the lush greenery of the Au Sable State Forest. The surrounding terrain is characterized by towering pines and clear, cool waters. Its position on the river makes it a primary hub for the legendary Mason Tract, a scenic and protected area known for its pristine beauty and lack of development. The atmosphere is quiet and secluded, offering a stark contrast to more developed RV resorts, making it a true sanctuary for nature lovers seeking a genuine connection with the outdoors.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state forest campground, the facilities here are purposefully minimal to preserve the natural environment. You will find vault toilets and a hand-pump for potable water rather than electric or sewer hookups. The sites are wooded and provide a sense of privacy, accommodating both tents and smaller to medium-sized RVs. The standout feature is the dedicated canoe launch, which allows campers to easily transition from their site to the river. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the proximity to various trailheads ensures easy access to miles of woodland paths.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this area of Michigan. The Au Sable River is world-renowned for trout fishing and leisurely paddling trips that can last for hours or days. Travelers can spend their days drifting down the river or exploring the Mason Tract Pathway, which offers roughly 11 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails. A short drive into the city of Grayling provides access to local shops, while nearby Hartwick Pines State Park offers a look at one of the last remaining stands of old-growth white pine in the state.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for paddlers and anglers who want immediate access to the water. Because the sites are rustic and do not offer modern utilities, it is best suited for RVers who are self-contained or those who enjoy boondocking-style camping in a deep forest setting. If you prefer a quiet, low-tech environment where you can wake up to the sound of the river and spend your evenings around a campfire under a dark, starry sky, this is the perfect destination for your next Michigan adventure.

Great canoe / kayak rental with affordable rates. Very friendly staff and everyone was so helpful. They will keep your car keys safe while you’re in the river too so you don’t accidentally lose them in the river.
