Bagby Recreation Area

Overview

Bagby Recreation Area offers a rugged and scenic retreat located at the upper end of Lake McClure. This destination is distinct for its historic significance and its unique position where the Merced River flows into the reservoir. Managed by the Merced Irrigation District, it provides a natural canyon setting that appeals to travelers looking to escape more crowded commercial parks. It is a place where the sounds of the river and the sights of the Sierra Nevada foothills take center stage for a peaceful camping experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the iconic Highway 49 in Mariposa County, the park sits deep within a steep-walled canyon. The geography is dominated by the winding Merced River and the fluctuating waters of Lake McClure. This location serves as a gateway to California’s historic Gold Country, offering dramatic vistas of oak-studded hills and rocky outcrops. The proximity to the Wild and Scenic Merced River provides a raw wilderness backdrop that is rare for many accessible RV destinations.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a mix of camping options designed for those who appreciate a simpler way of life. Key features include:

  • Partial hookup sites offering water and electrical connections.
  • Primitive campsites for those seeking a traditional dry-camping experience.
  • A functional boat launch providing access to the upper reaches of the lake.
  • Basic restroom and shower facilities for guest convenience.
The focus here is on utility and access to nature rather than resort-style luxuries, making it a favorite for self-contained RVers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw, with fishing for bass and trout being highly popular among year-round visitors. The historic town of Mariposa is a short drive away, offering charming local boutiques and the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Additionally, the park serves as a strategic base camp for those planning day trips to the Arch Rock entrance of Yosemite National Park. Hikers and history buffs can also explore the remnants of the region's rich gold mining and railroad past.

Who This Park Is Best For

Bagby is an ideal choice for anglers and boaters who want direct access to the water without the distractions of a high-density resort. It also suits independent RV travelers who value solitude and a sense of place over organized social programming. If you are seeking a rustic home base while exploring the Sierra foothills or the nearby national park, this area provides the perfect blend of quietude and proximity to Northern California’s greatest natural wonders.

Pretty interesting space with nice views. Has a bunch of fishing spots along the water. Also, probably a good place for boating or kayaking up the river. I'll be back again for a longer visit next time for sure.
