Banff/Rampart Creek
Overview
Rampart Creek Campground offers a quintessential mountain experience for those traveling along the famous Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. This is a primitive campground that emphasizes the raw beauty of the Canadian Rockies over modern luxuries. Visitors here find themselves surrounded by dense forest and towering peaks, providing a deep sense of seclusion. It serves as a peaceful retreat for travelers who want to escape the crowds of the main townsites and enjoy a back-to-basics wilderness stay in one of the world's most scenic corridors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 88 kilometers north of Lake Louise, the park is nestled in the northern reaches of Banff National Park. The site is framed by the rugged beauty of the North Saskatchewan River and sits beneath the shadow of impressive limestone cliffs. Because of its high-altitude location, the air is crisp and the scenery is dramatic, featuring glaciers and alpine meadows nearby. The surrounding wilderness landscape is home to diverse wildlife, including grizzly bears and mountain goats, making every morning a potential nature viewing opportunity.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic facility, Rampart Creek provides a limited set of amenities designed for self-sufficient RVers. You will find no hookups or cell service at this location, making it a true off-grid destination. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit for evening gatherings. Shared facilities include well-maintained pit toilets and a hand pump for water, though it is recommended to treat or boil the water before use. Due to the tight turns and smaller stalls, the park is best suited for small RVs and campervans rather than large motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground’s location is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts. It is just a short drive from the spectacular Columbia Icefield, where travelers can explore the Athabasca Glacier. Nearby, the Weeping Wall offers a stunning display of waterfalls cascading down Cirrus Mountain. For those who enjoy hiking, the Parker Ridge trail provides incredible views of the Saskatchewan Glacier. This section of the park is also famous for its unmatched stargazing opportunities, as there is virtually no light pollution in the area to obscure the night sky.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for the self-contained traveler who values silence and mountain scenery over modern conveniences. It is a top choice for photographers and hikers who want to be first on the trails in the morning. If you enjoy unplugging from technology and do not mind the lack of electricity or Wi-Fi, Rampart Creek will fit your travel style perfectly. It is best for those with smaller rigs who appreciate a smaller, more intimate campground setting tucked away in the heart of the majestic mountains.

Absolute gem in the wilderness! We had campsite 32 and 34 in August 2025. The absolute best view you will have on campsite 32, campsite 34 and 30 are also great and have fantastic views and access to the river. BOOK IN ADVANCE! We reserved the campsite the second they opened reservations (for 2025 season around 20th january 2025) and we had to queue up the second the website opened for reservations. We were number 30.000 in queue but still managed to get 2 good campsites. We had a 24ft RV and it was plenty of room, we did not use the campground bathrooms.

Beautiful campsite location with gorgeous little hikes and amazing scenery! Bears are often in the area (we saw bear tracks less than 10 minutes from the campsite) so make sure to bring bearspray and properly dispose of food waste. Unfortunately our plot was next to the dumpster and parking lot which wasn’t very private but we still had an amazing time. There are lots of more secluded areas but those get booked up quite fast. Great views of the river and mountains with peaceful easy hikes nearby!

It’s a slightly remote and less popular campsite, and the water source is a bit far, requiring a walk to reach. So we drove to get water. Due to the secluded nature of the area, we decided to sleep in the car for safety.

Truly beautiful campground. Totally remote and there is a beautiful stream nearby. There is no cell service. There are only pit toilets which are very clean. We have a drinking water tap available as well.

Camping area right off the Icefield Parkway. Wooded mainly for smaller campers and tents. We had a Lance truck camper without difficulty parking. Had to level a bit. There were a few larger campers. I'm thinking they knew ahead of time they would fit. The creek is beautiful. There is a small vault restroom, no showers or other facilities. Fire pit and picnic table in each site. Nice and quiet! Thank you for a great night of camping!
