We trailered in and out each day to ride the MDH. This was a perfect spot to setup base camp. The horses had a clean spot to eat and rest with fresh water real close by so you could drag the hose right over. And there were many, many trails in and around the ranch for our shorter ride days too! Thanks for having us Doug!!

This was a welcome treat. The drive in is beautiful and the campground was quiet. This is a rustic campground and worth going to.

Bar X Ranch is a campground that I go to throughout the year with my horses. It has electrical hookups for your camping unit and corals and water for your horses. Lots of trails to ride. Always a great stay, with a scenic view.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with BarX. As noted previously by other reviewers - the travel to get to the facility is a dirt road, so expect your vehicle and rig to be dusty. Expectations were tempered on our end - so we weren't bothered by this. Upon arrival, we were met by the owner and a few friends(staff or family?)- and they were all extremely friendly. Upon pulling into the ranch, the 'host' took us to a place to set up for the night. We weren't traveling with horses, but instead 3 littles (2, 5, and 6) and they thoroughly enjoyed the horses! Grasshoppers galore... There aren't defined sites, but that again didn't bother us. It's truly peaceful here and you cannot beat the friendliness of the crew onsite. Thanks for the lovely stay!

I have mixed emotions on how to review this campground, so I will list pros and cons. Pros: Owner was very nice and accommodating. If you are traveling with horses, which we were not, there were several pens available. It is located in beautiful country. Cons: There are not well defined sites at all. Basically, it was a matter of finding an area to park that would reach one of the outlets. Water was available to fill up your holding tank but there was no dump station. The roads leading up to the campground were extremely dusty, like so dusty it even infiltrated through the slide-in of our camper. The bath house was functional with running water but not nice at all. I'm sure this campground is enjoyed by horse people due to lots of trails for riding with incredible views. However, if you're not traveling with horses, I would not recommend. Would I stay here again? No.

Owners are friendly and accommodating folks. Its worth noting that hookups are only electrical. There is drinking water available. We ended up dumping at Medora CG for $5. Also of note is the 6 miles of very dusty dirt road to get into and out of the ranch.

Was not a planned stop but so glad we did. Used it as a two day rest up during our cross country trip. The views are beautiful. It is in the middle of a working ranch so cattle and horses are all around you. The owner was very nice and shared a little history of his family which was an added bonus for two old City folk. Would highly recommend to the tired traveler but know that there is electric but no water hook ups or pump station. We were free to roam the place and enjoyed every minute.

More good things than bad. 😊 overall I was very happy with our stay and the scenery was amazing. Next time I’ll book an entire week. So many trails I can’t wait to explore more. I will say I do wish it was more organized and a few things I’d do differently to make my stay better and be more prepared. Beautiful accessible trails and you could pretty much pick how difficult you wanna go. I saw the other campground riding by and it’s very nice but really no shade for your horses. Bar X was really nicely shaded in areas and really easy to get too. 1- make sure your new to you truck has a spare. I ran over a screw in the camp (for sure) and I didn’t have a spare. My fault of course, accidents happen but you are definitely on your own as far as fixing any problems like that. I was lucky I had awesome neighbors to help me and let me borrow their car to get a patch. I messaged the ranch numerous times pleading for help and none of my messages were answered because they are so busy. This is an active ranch not a campground with caretaking so keep that in mind. When I called he said maybe he could help me the next day but kept it short and I didn’t see him till early evening before I left to return home. 2- definitely have other penning options for your horses. They ran out of pens the day before I left and as I was leaving my 2 filled before I got my horses out. I left a day early 😬 and the trailers were still piling in as I was headed out. 3- the pens are cattle panels and one of our horses is a sassy jerk sometimes and in the middle of the night put her leg through the panel kicking at her buddy 🙄 so if you have a marish mare keep that in mind. We’ll probably bring portable fence next time. 4- if you are reserving an electric spot be prepared you may have to share and not have enough to go around. I did not have this problem but the ladies that came the day before I left lost their spot didn’t have enough pens for the horses they had reserved and didn’t have enough 30amp for their rigs. They told me they reserved it in January and this was the second week in June. 5- bring a portable fire ring and firewood. I brought firewood but I didn’t have a ring and it was so windy and dry I didn’t dare just start one.
