Barkley Lake - COE/Bumpus Mills
Overview
Bumpus Mills Campground is a hidden gem managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the shores of Lake Barkley. Unlike larger, bustling parks, this destination offers a peaceful, small-scale experience with only fifteen sites available. It provides a serene retreat for travelers who value a quiet natural setting combined with direct access to one of the region’s most popular waterways. The park is known for its well-maintained grounds and friendly atmosphere that reflects the charm of rural Tennessee.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in the scenic rolling hills of Middle Tennessee, the park sits on the banks of Saline Creek, a significant tributary of Lake Barkley. The surrounding area is characterized by dense hardwood forests and calm waters, creating a perfect backdrop for relaxation. Its location in Bumpus Mills offers a sense of seclusion, yet it remains accessible for those exploring the Tennessee-Kentucky border region. The landscape transitions beautifully through the seasons, offering vibrant greenery in the summer and striking foliage in the fall.
Amenities & Park Features
Despite its small size, the campground provides essential comforts for RVers, including water and electric hookups at most sites. On-site facilities include a clean bathhouse with hot showers, a playground for families, and a convenient dump station. One of the primary draws is the on-site boat ramp, which allows visitors to launch easily onto the lake for a day of recreation. The sites are generally spacious and offer a degree of privacy that is hard to find in larger commercial RV resorts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, as the park is a prime spot for fishing and boating. Lake Barkley is famous for its crappie and bass, making it a favorite for anglers. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the massive Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, which features hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and a planetarium. History buffs will also appreciate being near the Fort Donelson National Battlefield, where they can learn about significant Civil War history while enjoying river views.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for RVers who prefer rustic, intimate campgrounds over high-traffic resorts. It is perfectly suited for couples looking for a quiet getaway or fishing enthusiasts who want to be steps away from the water. Because of its limited number of sites, it attracts those who enjoy a sense of community and a slower pace of life. If you are looking for a nature-focused escape with basic modern conveniences, Bumpus Mills provides the perfect home base for your next adventure.

No phone service at all, had to drive 16 miles to call out. Beautiful campground but you are off grid. Great fishing. Careful walking on wooden bridge, it rained and was slick.

Great little campground but dont plan on using the restrooms. Because they are beyond disgusting. The white urinals are filled with thousands of dead and living flies. So much that the urinals are nearly black. Id rather use a porta john then even go in there ever again. The views are insane though so if you have an rv you will be fine. But for anyone van/car camping bring a shovel. Went back to try to get a photo as proof but there was a 4in spider in one of the urinals, feeding on the fly buffet, so i noped out.

If you want a small affordable campground this is your place. The shower house could use for some regular cleaning. I’m not sure it was cleaned at all the time we were there. Not much to do in the area but fish unless you really want to explore outside of the campground. I learned after our time there our site is the worst with bugs. I thought the bugs were just extra because it had rained a lot but a friend told me to never book that site bc the bugs are always backs there. Our site also gets all the rain drained from the upper site. When we checked in the host did prepare us our site would flood for a few areas since rain was expected. The sunsets were fabulous!

The host was really nice. The sites are a little close together but offer great views of the lake. Not much to do without a 30 minute drive so it is the perfect campground to set up kick back and relax. The only reason it doesn't get more stars is the latrines and showers. The company contracted to clean them only makes an effort at hosing the floors down and wiping the sinks. I know it is a campground but at least sweep up the bugs instead of hosing them to the corners.

Great area to camp. Small campground, good sights. Needs work done to the showers and hot water flow. Been like this the last 4 times we've camped.
