Barren River Lake - COE/The Narrows
Overview
Barren River Lake - The Narrows is a premier Corps of Engineers facility that offers a serene retreat amidst the rolling hills of south-central Kentucky. Known for its lush forest canopy and immediate proximity to the water, this park provides a classic camping experience that emphasizes natural beauty over commercial flair. It serves as a tranquil gateway for travelers looking to explore the 10,000-acre reservoir while enjoying a slower pace of life under a dense hardwood forest.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the quiet community of Lucas, Kentucky, the park is perched on a scenic peninsula that juts into the eastern portion of Barren River Lake. The landscape is defined by dramatic limestone bluffs and mature trees that provide significant shade and privacy for most RV sites. The surrounding Barren County area is largely rural and agricultural, ensuring that the atmosphere remains peaceful and free from the light pollution found in larger cities.
Amenities & Park Features
The Narrows features well-maintained campsites that include 30 and 50-amp electric hookups along with potable water. The facility is designed for convenience, offering a multi-lane boat ramp, a dump station, and accessible shower houses. Families often appreciate the onsite playground and the designated swimming area, while the paved site pads accommodate a variety of rig sizes, though some manual leveling may be required due to the natural lakeside terrain.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with the lake being a hotspot for fishing for hybrid striped bass, crappie, and walleye. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the park is located just a short drive from the trail systems and golf course at Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Additionally, visitors are within thirty miles of Mammoth Cave National Park, allowing for easy day trips to explore the world’s longest known cave system and its diverse hiking trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want quick, easy access to one of Kentucky’s most popular lakes. It also appeals strongly to families and retirees who prefer a rustic, quiet environment over a busy resort atmosphere. If you enjoy spacious, wooded campsites and the unique charm of a government-managed recreation area, The Narrows provides a high-quality, budget-friendly base for your next Bluegrass State adventure.

Nice for one night, or fishing. We had fire ants at camp site, millions of flying insects and spiders in bath house.

This is a crappy campground!!! First its on a hillside and nothing level but half of the parking. The water hook up is about 50' away. No phone wifi!! Narrow is right because the camper spots are very narrow!! No hot water in the showers! This is my first and last time ever camping here!! If you like camping on a hillside, no phone service, and cold showers and share your food with plenty of ants then this place is for you!!

Nice campground. The A loop is much flatter than the B loop. We stayed on B5. It was flat at the top 1/3 but 2/3 of the site had a pretty good slope. I would not recommend more than a 30 foot camper on this site. Not a whole lot to do here unless you have a boat.

Love this place... easy water access, clean, always a good time. This trip was only a day trip... reasonably priced boat launch, $5 when not camping. 4th of July fireworks display at the state lodge is AWESOME, this year 25 minutes long. Shot out over the water, beautiful camera shots from a boat.
