Overview

Base Camp Family Campground serves as a welcoming gateway for travelers exploring the high-altitude wonders of the San Luis Valley. This park provides a well-maintained home base with clear views of the surrounding peaks, offering a mix of classic camping and modern convenience. It transitions away from its previous franchise identity to offer a more personalized camping experience while maintaining the high standards and clean facilities that experienced RVers expect when visiting southern Colorado.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just east of Alamosa, Colorado, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet, providing crisp mountain air and panoramic mountain vistas. The property is positioned perfectly to witness stunning sunrises and sunsets over the Sangre de Cristo Range. The landscape is quintessential high-desert, featuring low-profile vegetation that ensures unobstructed views of Mount Blanca from nearly every site within the campground boundaries, making for a scenic stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is designed with traveler convenience in mind, featuring spacious pull-through sites that easily cater to big rigs and towing setups. Guests have access to essential utilities including 30 and 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. For those traveling with pets, the dedicated dog park offers a safe, fenced space for exercise. On-site facilities like clean restrooms, hot showers, and a laundry room provide the comforts of home, while the seasonal store stocks essentials for the road.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Great Sand Dunes National Park, located a short drive away, where travelers can hike the tallest dunes in North America or enjoy seasonal sand sledding. For a different landscape, Zapata Falls offers a refreshing hike to a secluded waterfall nestled in a rock crevasse. The nearby city of Alamosa provides local dining, museums, and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, offering a rich historical perspective of this unique mountain region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for adventure-seeking families and road trippers who want proximity to national landmarks without sacrificing reliable infrastructure. Its open layout and easy highway access make it perfect for long-haul RV owners who need room to maneuver large trailers. Whether you are stopping for a single night on a cross-country trek or using it as a multi-day hub for mountain exploration, the park offers a quiet atmosphere for rest.

This was our first time at the Base Camp, and we WILL be back. The rest/shower rooms were immaculate! Much cleaner and more roomy than other campgrounds. The super-wide sites were a welcome change too! Even thought the camp was quite full, we didn’t hear hardly anyone else for the duration of our stay. Thanks for having a great place to be!

This campground was the perfect spot for our trip to the Sand Dunes. It was only about a 23 minute drive from camp. The shower house was so nice and clean. The views from camp were beautiful. The RV spots were huge so that’s a big plus!

Great spot when traveling thru Colorado and near Great Sand Dunes NP. Sites are large with lots of space between each camper. Host was very helpful during our stay. Facilities are very clean as well. Close to Alamosa and what the twin has to offer is an added plus.

Our experience was similar to other positive reviews. Perfect base camp for the area. No frills, but the friendly staff does an excellent maintenance job. Sites are perfectly level, largest sites we've ever seen (RVing sine 2011 across the country). Very nice and clean bathrooms and shower. Some road noise during the day, but mostly quiet at night. Good communication from host regarding check in details, maintenance, and a brief power outage during our stay. Definitely recommend!

This campground lives up to its name. Perfect location outside of town but close enough to Alamosa for supplies, gas, or meals. Shot 30 minute drive to Great Sand Dunes Visitors Center. Don't forget to hide Zapata Falls before the park entrance. The grounds are level sites. The bathrooms are like a spa. Coin laundry is very reasonably priced. Great place!
