Bastendorff Beach Park (Coos County Park)

Overview

Bastendorff Beach Park is a premier Coos County destination offering a classic Oregon Coast experience. Perched on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Charleston, this park provides a blend of rugged natural beauty and convenient accessibility. Visitors often come here for the sweeping ocean views and the refreshing salty air that defines the Southern Oregon shoreline. It is a well-maintained facility that serves as a perfect base camp for travelers seeking a scenic coastal retreat without the high-pressure environment of a commercial resort.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off the Cape Arago Highway, the park is tucked away from the main bustle of Coos Bay while remaining close to essential services. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dramatic coastal cliffs and thick coastal forests. To the north, the mouth of Coos Bay offers views of passing ships, while the immediate vicinity features the expansive sands of Bastendorff Beach. This location is part of a distinguished chain of parks, placing guests within minutes of some of the state’s most photographed shorelines.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to various camping styles with a mix of RV sites, tent areas, and cozy cabins. Most RV sites offer electric and water hookups, though visitors should plan to utilize the on-site dump station as individual sewer connections are not provided. Essential comforts include clean restrooms, coin-operated showers, and multiple playgrounds for families traveling with children. The park also features large group picnic shelters and fire rings, making it an ideal spot for evening gatherings and roasting marshmallows after a day of exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within a short drive or walk from the campground. You can spend the afternoon exploring the botanical gardens at Shore Acres or watching seals and sea lions at Simpson Reef. The nearby village of Charleston is famous for its fresh seafood and crabbing docks. For those who enjoy the water, the beach below offers excellent opportunities for surfing and beachcombing, while the nearby hiking trails provide stunning vantage points of the rugged Pacific Northwest coastline.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for travelers who prefer a natural, rustic setting over a highly developed luxury RV park. It is particularly well-suited for families looking for space to play and explorers who want easy access to the region’s best state parks and hiking trails. If you appreciate the sound of crashing waves and a laid-back atmosphere, Bastendorff Beach Park offers an authentic Oregon camping experience that captures the true essence of the coast.

Nice, dog friendly beach with fine soft sand. Also cool to watch the ships come into the bay at the levy.

One of my favorite coastal parks on the whole pacific coast. With easy access to town, the beach, and a nice campground, you should really try out this spot! We enjoyed bringing the kids to the playground at the overlook spot where you can see down to the beach and beyond. The campground has nice amenities with many different spot types to chose from. The beach access is nice, but BE WARY OF POT HOLES when you get down toy the farthest beach parking lot near the jetty.

Absolutely breathtaking view stunning Beach. What did my heart really good was that I was officially unable for the first time ever to pick up garbage on my way off the beach.. because I couldn't find any! That was such a heartwarming experience

The beach at Bastendorff is beautiful. There is plenty of parking, either in the parking area or on the street and there is lots of room to enjoy the beach. I saw a review about some tide pools on the south side of the beach and sure enough, there is a great area to explore when the tide goes out. If you are up for traversing over a larger sand rock there is a secluded area with more tide pools as well as some bald eagles that fly around near the trees. We visited in late July and the afternoons were a bit more breezy than the morning but it wasn't bad. We also found a few smaller sand dollars which was pretty cool.
