Bear Lake Campground
Overview
Bear Lake Campground offers a tranquil and authentically rustic escape just a short drive from the bustling city center. This park provides a back-to-basics camping experience that focuses on the natural beauty and wide-open spaces of the Peace Country. It serves as a quiet retreat for those who want to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in the local landscape. Rather than a luxury resort, visitors will find a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of nature and the wind over the water take center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Grande Prairie, the campground is nestled along the shores of Bear Lake. The surrounding area is defined by the expansive prairie horizon and unique wetland ecosystems characteristic of Northern Alberta. The lake itself is a shallow, alkaline body of water, which attracts a diverse array of flora and fauna. This specific setting provides a sense of isolation and peace, making it feel much further from the city than it actually is, perfect for those seeking scenic views.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is designed for a traditional camping experience and features unserviced campsites that cater to self-contained RVs and tent campers. To ensure a comfortable stay, the park provides the following features:
- Spacious sites with private picnic tables and sturdy fire rings.
- Access to centrally located pit toilets and convenient garbage disposal areas.
- A dedicated playground area for children located within the park grounds.
Each individual site offers a generous amount of space, allowing travelers to enjoy their own slice of the landscape. There is also a boat launch available, though it is most suitable for small, non-motorized watercraft such as canoes or kayaks when water levels permit.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The most popular activity at this location is undoubtedly bird watching, as the lake serves as a vital staging area for thousands of migrating trumpeter swans and various waterfowl species. Just a short drive away, history buffs can visit the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum to learn about the region's rich prehistoric past. Additionally, the proximity to Grande Prairie allows visitors easy access to regional hiking trails and the diverse shopping and dining options available within the city limits.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is the perfect fit for nature enthusiasts and photographers who are eager to capture the beauty of Alberta's wildlife and vibrant sunsets. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who are fully equipped for dry camping and enjoy a more primitive, self-sufficient lifestyle. Those seeking a break from crowded, commercial RV parks will appreciate the spaciousness and the slower pace of life found here, making it a top choice for a peaceful weekend away from the city.

This campground was very nice! The on-site managers take excellent care of this small and friendly campground. It has a wonderful playground and when we were there a dad set up a makeshift slip and slide for the kids (and some adults). The beach had some nice sand but was pretty overgrown. There was plenty of firewood and kindling and lots of burn pits at the beach and sites. There is an excellent dock and kayak chute, both unusual and helpful. There was debate about swimming but I did and enjoyed it ( and 4 days later no itch or sickness) if you can get past the murky look it's sandy and refreshing. We took the half hour drive to the Grand Sunset Drive-In (whose proceeds support local charities) while we camped. This took are great camping trip to amazing! Also, Dog friendly.

Went on off-season and was very empty and clean, even the outhouses were kept in mint condition. Very cute. The water was a bit slimy, but it was overall a great experience.
