Belleplain

Overview

Belleplain State Forest offers a serene escape within the unique ecosystem of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Established nearly a century ago, this sprawling destination covers over 21,000 acres of protected woodlands in the southern part of the state. It provides a stark, peaceful contrast to the bustling boardwalks of the nearby coast. Visitors often come here to immerse themselves in nature, whether they are pitching a tent or parking a small rig among the towering oak, pine, and Atlantic white cedar trees that define the landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Woodbine, NJ, the forest is conveniently located in the northern reaches of Cape May County. The landscape is defined by its flat coastal plain terrain and the pristine, amber-colored waters of Lake Nummy. While the forest feels remarkably secluded and wild, it remains just a short drive from the Atlantic coastline. This makes it an ideal home base for those who want to experience the quiet of the woods while staying close to southern New Jersey beaches and popular shore towns.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping areas at Belleplain are known for their rustic charm rather than luxury resort amenities. Most sites are geared toward a traditional outdoor experience, providing a picnic table and fire ring at each individual spot. While full hookups are not available for larger rigs, the park provides access to modern restrooms and hot shower facilities for guest comfort. The highlight for many is the seasonal swimming area at Lake Nummy, which features a beach and a nearby concession stand for snacks and supplies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find over forty miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding throughout the year. Lake Nummy is a central hub for recreation, offering opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in a calm and scenic environment. For those looking to explore beyond the trees, the historic Victorian streets of Cape May and the lively Wildwood boardwalk are within a thirty-minute drive, offering a mix of world-class birdwatching and classic seaside entertainment.

Who This Park Is Best For

Belleplain is a perfect match for travelers who prefer a primitive camping style and a deep, quiet connection with the natural world. It is especially popular with birders and nature photographers due to the diverse wildlife found in the Pine Barrens ecosystem. Since the campsites are generally more compact and lack utility hookups, it is best suited for small RVs, camper vans, and tent campers who value a tranquil retreat away from the crowds found at commercial RV resorts.

Nice park. Well maintained. Trying to navigate around roads a little challenging as there is minimal signage. Stopped to use dump station-it’s not well identified—cost $30 but got a day pass with that so enjoyed park for a bit. @kaleb_and_lucas_adventures

We love camping here. Electric/Water hookup for campers, tent sites, cabins. The trails around the lake are gorgeous. Quiet, pleasant and relaxing experience!

My A1c service dog and I love it here, except the day we were attacked by an off-leash aggressive pitbull back in June and decided to cut our 3-day hike/camping trip short so I could tend to my dog’s wounds at the vet and at home. It is my understanding that the dog and its owners have been banned from Belleplain State Forest. But generally speaking, this state forest is a very peaceful place, lots of acreage to hike. Bathhouses are clean, showers work fine. Park service employees in office are friendly and accommodating. One can rent canoes and row the lake, but we just go for the hike and the necessity of shutting off the noise of everyday societal life.

We were camping for two nights in the cabin. It's clean and it has bunk beds and a table in the cabin. The shower and restroom are functional but outdated. The claim lake is good for kayaking and the beach is also enjoyable.

Nice camping area and trails well kept! Great for getting away as there was little to no cell phone coverage by T-Mobile. Was unsuccessful fishing anything out of the lake though. Tried different locations around the edge, baits, lures, depths, etc. Nothing even nibbled.
