Bellevue

Overview

Bellevue State Park offers a serene escape perched on high bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi River in eastern Iowa. This park is divided into two distinct areas: the **Nelson Unit** and the **Dyas Unit**. While the Nelson Unit provides historical context and stunning vistas, the Dyas Unit serves as the primary hub for RV travelers seeking a peaceful stay. It is a place where the rhythmic flow of the river and the calls of local eagles set a relaxing pace for your entire trip.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the scenic **Driftless Area**, the park is characterized by rugged limestone bluffs and lush plateaus that escaped the flattening effects of the last ice age. The town of Bellevue, Iowa, sits just below the park, offering a charming riverfront atmosphere with historic architecture. Staying here means you are surrounded by **panoramic river views** and dense hardwood forests. The environment provides a vibrant backdrop that changes beautifully with the seasons, from spring blooms to autumn gold.

Amenities & Park Features

The Dyas Unit provides well-maintained camping facilities suitable for various rig sizes. The park ensures a practical stay with several key features focused on the needs of the modern RVer:

  • **Electric hookups** available at a majority of the campsites for convenient power.
  • Access to modern **shower and restroom facilities** that are kept clean for guests.
  • A conveniently located dump station and fresh water access for self-contained units.

These features make it easy to transition from a day of exploration to a comfortable evening by the campfire under the Iowa stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring the **Lock and Dam No. 12** is a must, where you can watch massive barges and riverboats navigate the complex river system. The Nelson Unit features a unique **Butterfly Garden** that attracts numerous species during the warmer months, alongside an interpretive center. Adventure seekers should head to the bluff-top overlook platforms for some of the best photography spots in the state. Additionally, the local shops and antique stores in downtown Bellevue offer a taste of authentic river-town culture just minutes away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for **nature enthusiasts** and photographers who want to capture the dramatic landscape of the Mississippi River valley. It is a fantastic choice for **family RVers** looking for a safe, educational environment with plenty of outdoor space to roam. Those who prefer a quieter, more scenic pace of life over a bustling commercial resort atmosphere will find Bellevue to be a perfect fit for their travel style.

Beautiful park, clean campground. Check length of site before selecting. Nice overlook and butterfly garden close from parking.

Very clean, peaceful campground with a couple neat overlooks over Mississippi River! Not overcrowded like most other campgrounds in summer - peace, and quiet, and lots of wildflowers! Butterfly garden in its sister unit as well!

Beautiful place. Close to Galena, IL, Mines of Spain, Maquoketa Caves, and Dubuque. Campgrounds and restrooms were clean and well kept. My only issue is we had a group put their tent 3ft from our campfire. Of course this group was loud and obnoxious, but with this new wave of campers the DNR/Rangers need to be more observant of campers invading other campers sites. I know the ranger saw because he stopped and gave them suggestions on were they could have put their tents. I wish the ranger would have said something that should be common sense. I will say something next time. Their tent was literally 3ft from our campfire and 5ft into our campsite.

What a wonderful park! It wasn't crowded at all and after staying at cramped, packed private parks the last 3 stops, our spacious site was the bomb! Best bird watching park we may have ever been in. And we even saw a rare leucistic American Robin. We are from Texas and are already making plans to come back.

Stayed in one of the first-come-first-served spots. Plenty of length for our rig and we could stay flexible even though campground is sold out for Memorial Day. Nice overlooks of the river and the locks. Worked really well when the lowlands and other campgrounds were flooded. Well kept and clean, modern bathrooms. Update 2024: same spot, campground still looks great! Not too busy.
