Big Bar Lake
Overview
Big Bar Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential Cariboo experience, characterized by its tranquil atmosphere and stunning natural landscapes. Located on a high-altitude plateau, this park provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the great outdoors. The park is renowned for its clear waters and the scenic backdrop of the Marble Range, making it a favorite for travelers seeking a rugged wilderness experience without straying too far from the main travel routes. It is a place where the pace of life slows down significantly.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 42 kilometers northwest of Clinton, BC, the park sits within a unique transition zone between the dry interior plateau and the greener mountains. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful mix of open grasslands, lodgepole pine forests, and dramatic limestone peaks. Travelers will appreciate the scenic drive through the rolling hills of the South Cariboo, which offers frequent sightings of local wildlife and cattle grazing in the vast meadows that define this historic ranching region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial park, the facilities are designed to maintain a natural feel while providing necessary comforts. There are several vehicle-accessible campsites that can accommodate various RV sizes, though it is important to note there are no power or water hookups available. Visitors have access to well-maintained pit toilets, hand-pumped water, and a convenient boat launch for non-motorized or low-horsepower watercraft. Each site typically includes a fire ring and a picnic table, encouraging an authentic camping experience centered around the beauty of the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The lake is a premier destination for Rainbow Trout fishing, attracting anglers from all over the province to its calm waters. Beyond the shoreline, the nearby Marble Range Provincial Park offers challenging hiking trails and spectacular karst formations for adventurous explorers. A short trip back to the historic village of Clinton allows RVers to explore the area's gold rush history, browse local antique shops, and restock on essential supplies for their journey through the interior of British Columbia.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for RVers who prefer dry camping and value solitude over resort-style amenities. It is perfect for families wanting to introduce children to fishing and nature, as well as photographers looking for the perfect shot of a Cariboo sunset. If you travel in a self-contained unit and enjoy a quiet, starry night by the campfire, this destination provides the perfect rustic backdrop for your next northern adventure.

Great spot in August. Very quiet and great lake. Sites are a nice size. We have a 28-foot trailer and had no issues.

Big Bar Lake, located approximately 400 km from Vancouver, is a tranquil retreat ideal for nature lovers. The lake is perfect for fishing, canoeing, and swimming, surrounded by picturesque landscapes that provide excellent opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. The campsites are well-maintained and offer a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation. However, one downside is the prevalence of bugs, particularly mosquitoes, which can be bothersome during your stay. Despite this, the serene environment and beautiful scenery make Big Bar Lake a charming getaway from the city. 🏕🐕✨️♥️

Big bar lake is definitely a friendly family place. During late summer water is quite warm. Lots of wild life and fishing can be good! If you are camping with travel trailer you can get your water at the campsite from taps. Nice beaches for a swim! Lots of mosquitoes, but we were successful keeping them away with bug repellent!

Overall I would give this place 4 stars. The area is well maintained, very clean, clear clean waters, great viewing for wildlife and beautiful scenery of the lake. The staff were extremely friendly and even offered to let us move campsites to a more shady area. The cons were the bugs. No matter how much bug spray they were inescapable. Overall, it would be great if you had a fishing boat and brought plenty of bug spray. It would be a great fishing location.

This place is a beautiful found piece of treasure in our very own backyard! The water is amazing! The Camp Hosts were so friendly and helpful. There are hiking trails to explore the area, the natural, serene environment of acres of marshlands. Make sure you have a reliable vehicle to get to the Park on the 33 km dirt road that is filled with 100's of potholes. Once you're there, it will be hard to leave.
