Big Bend Park (Newaygo County Park)

Overview

Big Bend Park, managed by Newaygo County, offers a quintessential Michigan camping experience along the scenic backwaters of the Hardy Dam Pond. Located near White Cloud, this park is celebrated for its sprawling waterfront access and tranquil atmosphere. Whether you are arriving in a large motorhome or a compact travel trailer, the park provides a spacious layout that emphasizes the natural beauty of the Muskegon River valley. It serves as a peaceful retreat where the focus remains on the great outdoors, relaxation, and classic family-friendly recreation.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in a lush, wooded region of West Michigan, characterized by rolling hills and dense forests. Because it sits on the Hardy Dam impoundment, visitors enjoy a vast expanse of water that looks more like a lake than a river. The surrounding Newaygo County area is a haven for those who appreciate rustic landscapes and quiet country roads. Its proximity to the city of White Cloud ensures that essentials are never too far away, yet the park feels secluded enough to offer a genuine escape from the hustle of urban life.

Amenities & Park Features

Big Bend Park is well-equipped for RV travelers, featuring over 150 sites that primarily offer water and electric hookups. The facility includes modern restrooms and shower buildings to ensure a comfortable stay. For those bringing watercraft, the improved boat launch provides easy access to the Hardy Dam Pond, which is famous for its size and depth. Additionally, the park features a swimming beach, a playground, and on-site park rangers, making it a functional and comfortable base for long-term stays or quick weekend getaways.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. The park is a key access point for The Dragon Trail, a world-class non-motorized trail system that circumnavigates the Hardy Dam Pond, perfect for mountain biking and hiking. Fishing enthusiasts frequent these waters for walleye and bass, while others enjoy leisurely pontoon boating along the river's winding bends. The nearby Loda Lake National Wildflower Sanctuary offers a gentler pace for nature lovers, while the Muskegon River provides world-class fly fishing opportunities just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating enthusiasts and families who enjoy water-based activities. It appeals to RVers who prefer a natural, park-like setting over a paved resort experience. If you are a mountain biker looking to conquer the Dragon Trail, Big Bend Park serves as an excellent home base with direct access to the loops. It is a perfect choice for those seeking a balance between rugged adventure and the essential comforts of a well-maintained, welcoming county facility.

Stayed here several times without problems. They don't allow golf carts even if street legal, can't get boat slip unless the campsite is in your name, guest have to pay, and other tedious stuff.

Love camping here! Great people, beautiful view, and water access! Rates are reasonable and they have plenty of shade. Only thing that would make it a 6 star is with waste hook up but the sights do have power and water. Nothing like a sunrise view from the bench at the point!

Large lots, right on the Hardy Pond, clean bathrooms, economically priced!

Just a one night stay. Just getting to the campground is a muddy mess and the mud continues once in the campground. It would be really easy to put down some crush and run gravel, it would definitely help with all the mud. Made the reservation on Campspot and upon arrival, the lady seems to be surprised at me checking in, after mentioning I'm in 203 and looking for the dump station. Took her more than 10 minutes to write up a parking sticker, including needing to add my DL to the parking sticker. If this info is need, please ask for this at the online check in and have the parking passes ready and a list of guest checking in, it's really not that difficult and would speed up the process. I was just there one night and didn't use any facilities except the dump station which was fine. Beautiful lake and I'm sure its a nice place, but the mud, good Lord if you like having your RV all muddy then you probably won't mind, but just very disappointed in the conditions of the roads getting to and inside the park.

Had a great weekend up there memorial weekend this year! Stayed here 2 years ago and was a bit turned off by the rudeness of the staff but seems they have worked that out and my family and I had a great weekend! Mark at the point was a great host! Will definitely be back for more shenanigans! Minus a star for not allowing golf carts! 🤣
