Big Bog
Overview
Big Bog State Recreation Area offers a unique window into one of the most untouched and fascinating landscapes in the United States. Located in Waskish, Minnesota, this park preserves a massive 500-square-mile peatland, which is the largest of its kind in the lower 48 states. It provides a serene environment where the primary sounds are the wind through the pines and the calls of native birds. This destination is less about traditional resort luxuries and more about remote wilderness immersion and ecological wonder for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the northern edge of the sprawling Upper Red Lake, the park feels like a true northern frontier. The landscape is defined by the Tamarack River and the vast, spongy expanse of the bog itself. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by dense forests and unique wetlands that shift colors beautifully with the seasons. Its remote northern Minnesota location ensures dark skies for stargazing and a peaceful atmosphere far removed from the noise of major highways or urban sprawl.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground caters well to RVers with 31 electric sites that provide a comfortable base for exploring the wild surroundings. Featured amenities include:
- Seasonal modern restrooms and showers
- A convenient sanitary dump station
- Fire rings and picnic tables at every site
For those traveling during colder months or looking for a break from the rig, the park also offers camper cabins that provide a rustic, heated alternative for year-round stays.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The crown jewel of the park is the one-mile bog boardwalk, an accessible path that allows travelers to walk deep into the peatland to see rare orchids and carnivorous plants. Anglers flock here for the world-class Walleye fishing on Upper Red Lake, which is easily accessible via the park's boat ramp on the Tamarack River. Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars, as the area is a vital habitat for unique species that thrive in the undisturbed wetland ecosystem.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature enthusiasts and photographers who appreciate rare flora and fauna in a quiet setting. It serves as a perfect retreat for serious anglers looking to tackle the legendary waters of Upper Red Lake. Because of its quiet and rustic nature, it is best suited for travelers who prefer solitude and scenic beauty over modern resort amenities like swimming pools or organized social activities. It is a true escape for the independent traveler.

What a wonderful walk, surrounded by the beauty of nature. Highly recommend giving yourself time to take it all in, read the signage, identify foliage, and simply enjoy. It's quiet & peaceful, and the perfect opportunity to appreciate what this area has to offer.

Guess no one wants to go to the Bog in November. Had the whole park to ourselves. Had a nice hike and stayed in one of the wonderful cabins!

We went right after a rainstorm and the mosquitos were so bad, we headed back to camp. Determined to make this trail work, we donned jeans and long sleeved shirts and sprayed down with repellent and ventured back out. As long as we didn’t stop for long the mosquitos stayed away. The Bog Boardwalk is fantastic. There are interpretive signs along the walk that will share info about the bog, and if we would have been willing to brave the bugs we would have stopped to read. The scenery is otherworldly and the vegetation is beautiful. Our favorite was the pitcher plant. Highly recommend. Also, when spraying down with bug spray make sure it also repels black flies
