Overview
Big Hill Lake, specifically the Mound Valley Campground, offers a serene escape in the southeastern corner of Kansas. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this destination is widely recognized for its crystal-clear waters and lush, timbered hillsides. It provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the bustle of city life while enjoying the natural beauty and the quiet atmosphere of the Little Balkans region of the state.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the small community of Dennis, Kansas, the park is nestled within the rolling landscape of Labette County. The area is characterized by a mix of tallgrass prairie and dense hardwood forests that provide ample shade for many of the campsites. The campground features several dozen sites, many of which are equipped with electric and water hookups suitable for various RV sizes. On-site facilities include several key features for campers:
- A designated swimming beach for summer cooling.
- A convenient boat ramp for easy lake access.
- Multiple picnic shelters for group gatherings.
Travelers also have access to clean shower houses, flush toilets, and a dump station, ensuring that the rustic camping experience remains comfortable for long-term stays or weekend getaways.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Activities abound for outdoor enthusiasts, ranging from fishing for largemouth bass to hiking the scenic trails. The Big Hill Lake Horse Trail is a major draw, offering 17 miles of terrain for riders and hikers alike. For a dose of local history, the Little House on the Prairie Museum is located just a short drive away in nearby Cherryvale, offering a glimpse into the pioneer lifestyle that shaped this part of the country.

One of our favorite campgrounds. Sites aren't close together. Lots of trees and plenty of lake access.

This beach is a hidden gem, with just a few cozy umbrellas dotting the shoreline. Perfect for a relaxing day of soaking up the sun, playing in the waves, and making memories with loved ones. Can't wait to come back.

✅️ Swimming ✅️ Camping ✅️ Boating ✅️ Weddings If you wanna be outdoors and near water then Big Hill Lake is where you wanna be. From the many activities of swimming, camping, or just being out on the lake, Big Hill offers a variety of options, even the perfect place to say "I do!" Most areas are free with the exception of the lake, but at the low cost of $5 per car, why would you choose the public pool instead?

By far my favorite Kansas camping spot! The lake is deep and clear for this area. Fishing was so fun and there are lots of variety in this lake. The sunsets are beautiful and the trees are tall. Definitely provides the true camping atmosphere. There is a wide variety of campsite types with plenty of space in between them. The water is easily accessible, but boat wise only the one launch. We had a great time building sand castles on the beach. The swim area is completely sand and one of the only places here where you can swim with shoes off. The water is a bit chilly because the lake is so deep, but it was super refreshing on a hot day. The campground is well maintained, fire pits are clean and accessible and the bathrooms are clean, though currently out of soap. Showers were warm and clean as well. We saw lots of dog walkers and the kids playing on the playground were having fun. I’ll be returning!
